This Week at St. John’s

Sunday School and Youth Roundtable Children ages 3-11 who attend the 9:00 service are invited to Children’s Church. Please meet at the front step after the welcome to follow the crucifer to the upstairs room. We’ll return to “big church” at the Peace. Children ages 3 through 5th grade, meet us in the Atrium at 10:00 for Sunday School! We use the interactive Godly Play program to teach stories from our tradition in a hands-on manner. We’ll be in Classroom 2, on the 3rd floor by the unfinished room. Middle and high schoolers, meet in the Atrium at 10:00 for Youth Roundtable. We’ll walk to a bakery in Old Worthington for fellowship, discussion of the Bible readings for the day, and a sweet treat.
Youth Group meets Sundays at 2 p.m. – We meet weekly, along with youth from St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. This week we’ll gather at St. Stephen’s from 2:00 – 3:30 p.m. 6th -12th graders welcome, and there will be snacks!
Vestry and Junior Warden Elections – will take before and after the morning services on February 12. St. John’s bylaws do not permit proxy voting, but absentee ballots can be sent to anyone who is not able to vote in person. Contact Virginia Nussbaum in the parish office (VirginiaN@StJohnsWorthington.org or 614-846-5180) to request an absentee ballot; the ballot MUST be returned to the locked dropbox on the south steps by Sunday, February 12, 12:30 p.m.
Experiences from a recent Civil Rights Tour in Alabama – Anne Davidson – Please join us Sunday, February 12, at 10:15 a.m. in Kilbourne Hall to learn about what one such tour was like. The engaging nature of the various sites – churches, museums, musical performances, hospitality of residents – visited across the Alabama cities of Birmingham, Montgomery and Selma will be described. The re-experiencing of events through the recollections of ‘foot soldiers’ from the 1950’s and 60’s Civil Rights Movement was fascinating. Segregation, Jim Crow laws, social and political pressures in these communities were rampant and involved the use of terrorism, bombings and extremist members of the political right which foreshadowed the strife in today’s marginalized groups. Church life served a critical function in the organization of the Movement by preachers/pastors and congregations. Interpersonal interaction between group travelers and locals enhanced the history of the Movement and helped the group to bond internally and with the Alabaman representatives. This was an eye-opening, enriching and life-changing pilgrimage for me. The Diocese of Southern Ohio is planning a multigenerational trip at sites in Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee from May 31 through June 7, 2022. Newcomers Gathering – Sunday, February 26, our Newcomers Committee invites all “newish” attendees, and those wishing to greet our new attendees to an event in Kilbourne Hall in between the 9 am and 11:15 am services. Please join us for the fellowship, to learn about each other, and to hear about the programs at St. Johns. Who’s “new”? You are “new enough” if you consider yourself newish in any way. The Committee also invites all “not-so-new” members to attend so that they can meet others and share their experiences at St. Johns.
Lent Series: Episcopal 101 – Want to learn more about the Episcopal Church? Interested in being confirmed or received into the Episcopal Church as an adult? Don’t know what confirmation or reception are, but would like to know? Join us for Episcopal 101, our Lent series for 2023, which will meet on Wednesday evenings, March 1 through April 12 (skipping April 5) at 7:00 p.m. in Kilbourne Hall. We’ll use the book Walk in Love: Episcopal Beliefs and Practices by Scott Gunn and Melody Wilson Shobe as the basis for our conversations. All are welcome, whether you’re new to the Episcopal Church or are a longtime Episcopalian looking for a refresher. This series will also serve as adults’ preparation for confirmation or reception, which will take place on Sunday, June 25, when Bishop Wayne Smith visits St. John’s. Worthington Interfaith Neighbors Film Festival—Sunday, February 12 – Where Do We Go Now, a 2011 drama/comedy, continues the theme of the impact of religious conflict on a community, this time in a small village in Lebanon. A peaceful community of Christians and Muslims is shaken by rising tensions and violence between the men, and the women conspire to return to a spirit of harmony. The WIN Film Festival will be held at the Worthington United Methodist Church. The evening’s event will begin with a meal at 5:30 p.m. (optional), film showing at 6:30 p.m. and panel discussion at 8 p.m. Meal reservation email WINDiversity@gmail.com.
Coffee Hour – A paper copy of the Coffee Hour Host sign-up sheet is in the Atrium. This replaces the on-line Sign-up Genius. Please check your calendar and consider signing up to host a Sunday Coffee Hour. It is fun and a great way to share fellowship! St. John’s Book Club – On Wednesday February 15, we will be starting a new book, The Best Christian Short Stories, edited by Bret Lott. Each story confronts us with who we are in God’s world and forces us to look deeply at the human condition. We will meet each Wednesday at 7 pm on Zoom, click HERE. At our first meeting we will discuss the story by David Drury entitled “Things We Knew When the House Caught Fire.” The book is available from Amazon as used copies ranging in price from $1.09 to $9.99, plus shipping. If interested order your copy ASAP as shipping times can be long. There are 11 short stories and we will read this book as long as interest continues. Urgent – Help Victims of Earthquake in Southern Turkey – Worthington Interfaith Neighbors is sharing information from our friends at Turkish American Society of Ohio (TASO) about how your community can provide aid to victims of the earthquake in Turkey. As of Wednesday, the death toll has surpassed 11,000 and the destruction is catastrophic. Members of our Worthington community have lost family members in this tragedy, so the impact is local as well. A Bake Sale, raising funds for the victims of the earthquake in Turkey, will be held on February 12, 11 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. at 2885 Dublin Granville Rd. Donations may also be made to Embrace Relief Foundation at the link below. This is a Charity Navigator four star 100% rated charity.

If you wish prayers to be continued, simply list the name on the prayer list again. Of course, you may always add names aloud during the prayers of the people.
