This Week at St. John’s

Sunday School and Youth Roundtable — Children ages 3 through 5th grade, meet us in the Atrium at 10:00 for Sunday School! We use the interactive Godly Play program to teach stories from our tradition in a hands-on manner. We’ll be in Classroom 2, on the 3rd floor by the unfinished room. Middle and high schoolers, meet in the Atrium at 10:00 for Youth Roundtable. We’ll walk to a bakery in Old Worthington for fellowship, discussion of the Bible readings for the day, and a sweet treat. No children’s church this week, since the 9:00 a.m. service will be an all ages service.
Youth Group meets Sundays at 2 p.m. – We meet weekly, along with youth from St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. This week we’ll gather in the Carriage House from 2:00 – 3:30 p.m. 6th -12th graders welcome, and there will be snacks!
Vestry and Junior Warden Elections – will take place before and after the morning services on February 5, before the Celtic service on February 5, and before and after the morning services on February 12. St. John’s bylaws do not permit proxy voting, but absentee ballots can be sent to anyone who is not able to vote in person. Contact Virginia Nussbaum in the parish office (VirginiaN@StJohnsWorthington.org or 614-846-5180) to request an absentee ballot; the ballot MUST be returned to the locked dropbox on the south steps by Sunday, February 12, 12:30 p.m.
St. John’s Arts and Crafts Ministry – February 5, there will be a Show and Tell Exhibit in Kilbourne Hall during the Adult Formation hour between the 9:00 and 11:15 services. We have many gifted parishioners who will display their creations. We have painters (acrylic, oil and watercolor), a photographer, quilters, a rug hooker, book maker, weaver and lace maker, a knitter, cross stitcher and wood worker. This is an opportunity to see what we are doing and provide you with an opportunity to explore your own creative juices. Celtic Service, Sunday, February 5 – Please join us in the atrium at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 5, for our Celtic service honoring St. Brigid. This is a quiet, meditative, and intimate service based on the Iona Abbey Worship Book and followed by a time of fellowship and hospitality. We welcome all St. John’s parishioners and friends from outside our church family to join our Celtic circle as the days grow longer to light a candle for someone you love.
Be a Life Saver! – St. John’s will host a blood drive on February 8, 2:00-7:00 pm, in Kilbourne Hall, with Versiti Blood Center, the main supplier of blood to the Ohio State University Wexner Center. Someone needs blood every 2 seconds, and your donation may help a NICU baby, cancer fighter, sickle cell warrior, transplant patient, trauma survivor, or someone else. Gia has issued a friendly challenge to other first-time donors – a Graeter’s cone!
Virginia will be out of the office – Friday – Tuesday, February 3-7, returning Wednesday, February 8.

The Romantics and Mozart! The Worthington Chamber Orchestra’s second concert of this Masterworks season will be TODAY, Sunday, February 5 at 5:00 p.m. at Worthington United Methodist Church — a new place and a new time. Coffee Hour – A paper copy of the Coffee Hour Host sign-up sheet is in the Atrium. This replaces the on-line Sign-up Genius. Please check your calendar and consider signing up to host a Sunday Coffee Hour. It is fun and a great way to share fellowship! Experiences from a recent Civil Rights Tour in Alabama – Anne Davidson – Please join us Sunday, February 12, at 10:15 a.m. in Kilbourne Hall to learn about what one such tour was like. The engaging nature of the various sites – churches, museums, musical performances, hospitality of residents – visited across the Alabama cities of Birmingham, Montgomery and Selma will be described. The re-experiencing of events through the recollections of ‘foot soldiers’ from the 1950’s and 60’s Civil Rights Movement was fascinating. Segregation, Jim Crow laws, social and political pressures in these communities were rampant and involved the use of terrorism, bombings and extremist members of the political right which foreshadowed the strife in today’s marginalized groups. Church life served a critical function in the organization of the Movement by preachers/pastors and congregations. Interpersonal interaction between group travelers and locals enhanced the history of the Movement and helped the group to bond internally and with the Alabaman representatives. This was an eye-opening, enriching and life-changing pilgrimage for me. The Diocese of Southern Ohio is planning a multigenerational trip at sites in Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee from May 31 through June 7, 2022. Lent Series: Episcopal 101 – Want to learn more about the Episcopal Church? Interested in being confirmed or received into the Episcopal Church as an adult? Don’t know what confirmation or reception are, but would like to know? Join us for Episcopal 101, our Lent series for 2023, which will meet on Wednesday evenings, March 1 through April 12 (skipping April 5) at 7:00 p.m. in Kilbourne Hall. We’ll use the book Walk in Love: Episcopal Beliefs and Practices by Scott Gunn and Melody Wilson Shobe as the basis for our conversations. All are welcome, whether you’re new to the Episcopal Church or are a longtime Episcopalian looking for a refresher. This series will also serve as adults’ preparation for confirmation or reception, which will take place on Sunday, June 25, when Bishop Wayne Smith visits St. John’s. Worthington Interfaith Neighbors Film Festival—Sunday, February 12 – Where Do We Go Now, a 2011 drama/comedy, continues the theme of the impact of religious conflict on a community, this time in a small village in Lebanon. A peaceful community of Christians and Muslims is shaken by rising tensions and violence between the men, and the women conspire to return to a spirit of harmony. The WIN Film Festival will be held at the Worthington United Methodist Church. The evening’s event will begin with a meal at 5:30 p.m. (optional), film showing at 6:30 p.m. and panel discussion at 8 p.m. Meal reservation email WINDiversity@gmail.com.
New Book Club for the New Year – We are reading The Wonder Worker: A Novel (St. Benet’s Trilogy, Book 1), by Susan Howatch. The book deals with many spiritual issues and guides the reader to examine their own ideas about God and humanity. We meet on Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m. on Zoom, click HERE.
