Summer Sundays!  During the 9:00 a.m. worship services this summer, kids ages 3-11 are invited to join us for Summer Sundays – two Safe Church-trained adults will take kids to spend some time on our playground (or a classroom if there’s rain) for the first half of the service, returning in time for communion.

Parish Pancake Breakfast/Worthington Resource Pantry Drive – August 13, 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. – fun Sunday morning breakfast with a twist.  Breakfast is free and open to all!  We’ll be serving pancakes, sausage, juice, coffee, tea, and all the accompaniments. The Outreach and Social Justice Committee, along with the Newcomers Committee, are hosting a parish pancake breakfast and are asking for your help with a freewill monetary gift to benefit the Worthington Resource Pantry (WRP).  Freewill monetary gifts through August 13 can be 1) cash or check to St. John’s Church with WRP Ministry drive in memo line in offering plate; 2) mail check with WRP Ministry drive in memo line to St. John’s, 700 High St., Worthington OH 43085; 3) Online donations on the website, choose one-time donation, and select the Current Outreach Project – WRP Ministry drive; 4) cash or checks at the Pancake Breakfast.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Lily Balukjian (Thompson) at 614-899-6300 or Jean Duncan at 215-534-7290.

Sunday School for Kids & Youth Resumes Next Week!  Next Sunday, August 20th, our Sunday school offerings for children and youth resume after their summer hiatus! All offerings are supervised by two Safe Church trained adults. Here’s the rundown:

For the first half of the 9am service, kids are invited to join us for children’s church upstairs, with a children’s sermon and time for prayer. Kids return to the sanctuary in time for communion.
At 10:15am between the services, youth (12 and up) are invited to join us for Youth Roundtable, where we grab a snack and talk about the readings scheduled for that particular Sunday. Meet in the atrium.
Also at 10:15, kids aged 3-11 are invited to join us for Godly Play, a Montessori-style Sunday school program. Meet in the atrium.

Back-to-School Blessings– We’ll offer blessings for students, parents, and educators at all levels, from preschool to graduate programs, at both services on Sunday, August 20.

Worship Moves to Kilbourne Hall on August 20 – The next round of plaster repairs in our beloved 192-year-old nave begins on August 14. Scaffolding will be in place for about three to four weeks while cracked plaster in the barrel vault is removed, any necessary repairs are made, and new plaster is laid. During that time, worship services will move to Kilbourne Hall on both Sundays and Wednesdays. Please enter via the Atrium and take the stairs or elevator up to Kilbourne.

Chair Yoga Classes – Facing Loss is hosting parishioner Melanie Miller, a certified yoga instructor, to teach a series of 6 Chair Yoga classes, 12:00-12:50 pm, on Tuesdays, August 15 & 29, September 12 & 26, and October 3 & 17, in the atrium, for a donation of $5-10 per class. Sign up on the sheet on the table in the atrium, or contact Cynthia Woodbeck at 614-638-5054 or cwoodbeck235@gmail.com  Questions welcome.

Singles Dining Out – will gather for its next dining adventure on Wednesday, August 16, at 6:00 pm at Figlio, 1369 Grandview Avenue, Columbus OH 43212. You can go to http://figliopizza.com/grandview and scroll down to find a clickable link to their menu of wood-fired pizzas, pasta, and other entrees.  Singles Dining Out is an informal group of St. John’s parishioners and friends, always happy to welcome new participants. Singles and married individuals who will be attending without their spouse are welcome to participate, and feel free to invite a friend who is not a member of St. John’s. Please RSVP to Cynthia Woodbeck at 614-638-5054 or cwoodbeck235@gmail.com so she can let Figlio know the size of our group. We hope you can join us for great food and conversation on August 16!

Worthington Festival of Faith and Nations – Sunday, August 20, 4-7 p.m. – Selby Park, 358 Selby Blvd, Worthington. A gathering for people of all faiths, cultures, and national backgrounds, with food, music, games, entertainment and prizes!  Presented by Worthington Interfaith Neighbors, free of charge.

Facing Loss will take place on Monday, August 21, at 1:00pm at Worthington Presbyterian Church in the lower level living room. Our guest speaker will be Dr. Tim McQuade, new Interim Minister at WPC. We hope to see you at our Loss Lunch at La Chatelaine on August 28 at NOON. No reservation needed. We welcome you for fellowship and a good meal.

Street Church! Every Sunday, St. John’s Episcopal Church (Franklinton) organizes a feeding ministry that helps to nourish 50-60+ hungry people. St. John’s Worthington (us!) is one of a group of churches that share in that ministry by providing the cooked meal, setting up the buffet line, serving the meal, and cleaning up afterward.  The Rev. Christopher C. Richardson, Priest-in-Charge at St. John’s Franklinton, offers a short prayer service at 1:00pm followed by the meal. On Sunday, August 27, Ted Dziemianowicz and Nancy Elkington will lead our participation in this ministry. We will be cooking jambalaya and vegetables but we need your help!  There is a sign-up sheet on the Atrium information table where you can volunteer to contribute bottled water, bananas, and rolls – and also help transport the donated food — and also help serve the meal and clean-up afterward. The food and water need to be deposited under the table for collection on or before Sunday August 27 at 11:00am. Our volunteers will meet at 12:30pm at the parking lot of the PNC Bank at the corner of Broad Street and Central Avenue.      Questions? email Nancy at: nancyelkington@gmail.com or text 516-316-9104

Coffee Hour – Thanks to everyone who has served as a beverage host or snack host over the past few months! The sign-up sheet in the atrium still has a few spots open for beverage hosts or snack hosts in August, September, and October.  Hosting a Coffee Hour is fun and a great way to share fellowship.  Contact Jean Duncan at 215-534-7290 or jeanduncan59@msn.com with questions or to request training on set-up or equipment operation.

Suggested Grocery Items for Food Pantry Donations – for next week: granola bars; body wash.  You can place your food and toiletry donations in the food baskets in the atrium. You can also give online at www.worthingtonresourcepantry.org/donate/ or www.gladdenhouse.org/food-pantry. Another way to help is by volunteering yourself – check out www.worthingtonresourcepantry.org/volunteer/ to learn about volunteering at our local pantry, or www.midohiofoodbank.org to learn about the needs and opportunities at the Mid-Ohio Food Bank.

Flower Donors for this week are Joe and Carol Alutto. They are giving the flowers in thanksgiving for the life of Betty Lhotak.

Save the Date – Sunday, September 10, 3:00 p.m. – Music Series with Andrew Sords.  Plan to be there!

The email address for VirginiaN@StJohnsWorthington.org is still active in the interim, and will be checked several times a week by staff and volunteers.

2023 Fall Women’s Retreat October 13-14 – This year’s theme is: Let your Joy be the Joy that comes from Hope to receive all of the gifts of Grace.  The retreat will be held at the Transfiguration Spirituality Center, 495 Albion Avenue, Cincinnati, OH 45246. The Center does provide bedding and towels, private rooms and shared baths.  The Center has just started offering meals again, so the cost of the retreat is $80, which includes supper on Friday and both breakfast and lunch on Saturday.  If you would like to go but the cost is not in your budget, an anonymous donor has offered to pay for 1 room.  Please email donna.hissrich@gmail.com or

Eye Glass Donations – Please drop off your new or used eye glasses in the Eye Collection box located on the Atrium table outside the sanctuary.  Glasses are taken to the OSU Optometry department, and taken to countries in the Global South by optometry students.  St. John’s members and members of the Lions Club, Joan Bird, and Bostwick and Linda Wyman can share information, and encourage you to fill up the box!

Notes:

St. John’s has two separate prayer lists.

To add names to the “public” prayer list as seen above, please call the church office at 614-846-5180, or send an email to VirginiaN@stjohnsworthington.org. Names added to that sheet will remain on the prayer list for three weeks, or shorter if requested. Last names are not used. If you wish prayers to be continued, simply list the name on the prayer list again. Of course, you may always add names aloud during the prayers of the people.

There is also a “private” intercessory prayer group staffed by several volunteers from within the parish. To have your prayer request included on the prayer chain, please contact Pam Zych at 614-426-4248 and leave a message or send email to phzych4912@outlook.com
