Sunday School for Kids & Youth Resumes This Week! This Sunday, August 20th, our Sunday school offerings for children and youth resume after their summer hiatus! All offerings are led by two Safe Church trained adults. Here’s the rundown:
For the first half of the 9am service, kids are invited to join us for children’s church upstairs, with a children’s sermon and time for prayer. Kids return to Kilbourne Hall in time for communion.
At 10:15am between the services, youth (12 and up) are invited to join us for Youth Roundtable, where we grab a snack and talk about the readings scheduled for that particular Sunday. Meet in the atrium.
Also at 10:15, kids aged 3-11 are invited to join us for Godly Play, a Montessori-style Sunday school program. Meet in the atrium.
Back-to-School Blessings– We’ll offer blessings for students, parents, and educators at all levels, from preschool to graduate programs, at both services on Sunday, August 20.
Worship Moves to Kilbourne Hall on August 20 – The next round of plaster repairs in our beloved 192-year-old nave began on August 14. Scaffolding will be in place for about three to four weeks while cracked plaster in the barrel vault is removed, any necessary repairs are made, and new plaster is laid. During that time, worship services will move to Kilbourne Hall on both Sundays and Wednesdays. Please enter via the Atrium and take the stairs or elevator up to Kilbourne.
Worthington Festival of Faith and Nations – Sunday, August 20, 4-7 p.m. – Selby Park, 358 Selby Blvd, Worthington. A gathering for people of all faiths, cultures, and national backgrounds, with food, music, games, entertainment and prizes! Presented by Worthington Interfaith Neighbors, free of charge.
Facing Loss will take place on Monday, August 21, at 1:00pm at Worthington Presbyterian Church in the lower level living room. Our guest speaker will be Dr. Tim McQuade, new Interim Minister at WPC. We hope to see you at our Loss Lunch at La Chatelaine on August 28 at NOON. No reservation needed. We welcome you for fellowship and a good meal.
Street Church! Every Sunday, St. John’s Episcopal Church (Franklinton) organizes a feeding ministry that helps to nourish 50-60+ hungry people. St. John’s Worthington (us!) is one of a group of churches that share in that ministry by providing the cooked meal, setting up the buffet line, serving the meal, and cleaning up afterward. The Rev. Christopher C. Richardson, Priest-in-Charge at St. John’s Franklinton, offers a short prayer service at 1:00pm followed by the meal. On Sunday, August 27, Ted Dziemianowicz and Nancy Elkington will lead our participation in this ministry. We will be cooking jambalaya and vegetables but we need your help! There is a sign-up sheet on the Atrium information table where you can volunteer to contribute bottled water, bananas, and rolls – and also help transport the donated food — and also help serve the meal and clean-up afterward. The food and water need to be deposited under the table for collection on or before Sunday August 27 at 11:00am. You are awesome! Nearly 100 members of our church family attended the Parish Pancake Breakfast last Sunday. The food was a hit. Smiles and laughter filled the room. Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of our parishioners, St. John’s will donate over $1,200 to benefit the Worthington Resource Pantry. The breakfast was a great celebration of fellowship and community support! Thank you to the members of the Outreach and Social Justice and Newcomers Committees for sponsoring this event. Special thanks to Ted, Eve, Marianne, Wendy, Karen, Larae, Tricia, Geralyn, Lily, Jean, and David Talbot for offering their time and effort in hosting the Parish Pancake Breakfast!
Chair Yoga Classes – Facing Loss is hosting parishioner Melanie Miller, a certified yoga instructor, to teach a series of Chair Yoga classes, 12:00-12:50 pm, on Tuesdays, August 29, September 12 & 26, and October 3 & 17, in the atrium, for a donation of $5-10 per class. Episcopal Community Ministries Emergency Food Insecurity Grant Fund – Please join us to support neighbors helping neighbors facing escalating food insecurity. Rising inflation, cutbacks in government assistance, and shrinking donations have created a perfect storm. Our local congregations continue to serve with food pantries and community meals but they can only do so much as food costs soar and needs rise. Local ministries are communicating a growing sense of desperation in their communities. The Diocese of Southern Ohio, through Episcopal Community Ministries (ECM), is awarding an Emergency Food Insecurity Grant in September to assist their work. Thanks to a $10,000 gift from an anonymous donor and a $10,000 award from the Bishop’s Discretionary Fund, we have a $20,000 foundation to kick off this emergency food grant. We need your help to make a difference in our local communities! Coffee Hour – Thanks to everyone who has served as a beverage host or snack host over the past few months! The sign-up sheet in the atrium still has a few spots open for beverage hosts or snack hosts in August, September, and October. Hosting a Coffee Hour is fun and a great way to share fellowship. Suggested Grocery Items for Food Pantry Donations – for next week: cereal, facial tissues. You can place your food and toiletry donations in the food baskets in the atrium. 2023 Fall Women’s Retreat, October 13-14 – This year’s theme is: Let your Joy be the Joy that comes from Hope to receive all of the gifts of Grace. The retreat will be held at the Transfiguration Spirituality Center, 495 Albion Avenue, Cincinnati, OH 45246. The Center does provide bedding and towels, private rooms and shared baths. The Center has just started offering meals again, so the cost of the retreat is $80, which includes supper on Friday and both breakfast and lunch on Saturday. Eye Glass Donations – Please drop off your new or used eye glasses in the Eye Collection box located on the Atrium table outside the sanctuary. Glasses are taken to the OSU Optometry department, and taken to countries in the Global South by optometry students. St. John’s members and members of the Lions Club, Joan Bird, and Bostwick and Linda Wyman can share information, and encourage you to fill up the box!

Names added to that sheet will remain on the prayer list for three weeks, or shorter if requested. Last names are not used. If you wish prayers to be continued, simply list the name on the prayer list again. Of course, you may always add names aloud during the prayers of the people.
