This Week at St. John’s
August 27, 2023
Sunday School for Kids & Youth Has Resumed! Our Sunday school offerings for children and youth have resumed after their summer hiatus! All offerings are led by two Safe Church trained adults. Here’s the rundown:
For the first half of the 9am service, kids are invited to join us for children’s church upstairs, with a children’s sermon and time for prayer. Kids return to Kilbourne Hall in time for communion.
At 10:15am between the services, youth (12 and up) are invited to join us for Youth Roundtable, where we grab a snack and talk about the readings scheduled for that particular Sunday. Meet in the atrium.
Also at 10:15, kids aged 3-11 are invited to join us for Godly Play, a Montessori-style Sunday school program. Meet in the atrium.
Worship Has Moved to Kilbourne Hall – The next round of plaster repairs in our beloved 192-year-old nave began on August 14. Scaffolding will be in place for about nine weeks while cracked plaster in the barrel vault is removed, any necessary repairs are made, and new plaster is laid. During that time, worship services will move to Kilbourne Hall on both Sundays and Wednesdays. Please enter via the south door or the 700 doors, or enter via the Atrium and take the elevator up to Kilbourne.
Street Church! Every Sunday, St. John’s Episcopal Church (Franklinton) offers a short prayer service at 1:00pm followed by a meal that helps to nourish 50-60+ hungry people. Ted Dziemianowicz and Nancy Elkington will lead our participation in this ministry of providing the cooked meal, setting up the buffet line, serving the meal, and cleaning up afterward on Sunday, August 27. We will be cooking jambalaya and vegetables but we need your help! There is a sign-up sheet on the Atrium information table where you can volunteer to contribute bottled water, bananas, and rolls – and also help transport the donated food — and also help serve the meal and clean-up afterward. The food and water need to be deposited under the table for collection on or before Sunday August 27 at 11:00 am. Our volunteers will meet at 12:30 pm at the parking lot of the PNC Bank at the corner of Broad Street and Central Avenue. Questions? email Nancy at: nancyelkington@gmail.com or text 516-316-9104
Facing Loss We hope to see you at our Loss Lunch at La Chatelaine on August 28 at NOON. No reservation needed. We welcome you for fellowship and a good meal.
St. John’s Choir Do you like to sing? Choir rehearsal will resume on Thursday, August 31, 7:00-8:30 pm, in the choir room on the 2nd floor. Anyone at any level is welcome to come sing with us. Choir members may choose to sing at the 9:00 am service, the 11:15 am service, or both. Please contact Nick Taylor at music@stjohnsworthington.org or 304-374-1666 if you have questions or need access to the building.
Andrew Sords Concert – Please join us in Kilbourne Hall on Sunday, September 10, at 3:00 pm as we welcome celebrated violinist Andrew Sords with pianist Elizabeth DeMio to kick off a new season of St. John’s Music Series. Mr. Sords has played all over the country as well as internationally and has received stunning reviews from publications such as ClevelandClassical.com, The Arizona Daily Sun, and Opus Colorado just to name a few. This program includes works by Brahms, Beethoven, Achron, and Sarasate.
Chair Yoga Classes – Facing Loss is hosting parishioner Melanie Miller, a certified yoga instructor, to teach a series of Chair Yoga classes, 12:00-12:50 pm, on Tuesdays, September 12 & 26, and October 3 & 17, in the atrium, for a donation of $5-10 per class. Sign up on the sheet on the table in the atrium, or contact Cynthia Woodbeck at 614-638-5054 or cwoodbeck235@gmail.com Questions welcome.
Singles Dining Out will gather for a potluck lunch at 2:00 pm on Sunday, September 17, at Suzan Jervey’s cabin and shelter house north of Newark. Please bring a potluck dish of your choosing. Suzan will provide iced tea, coffee, paper products, serving spoons, supplies for s’mores, tables, and chairs. The cabin is 50 minutes from the church and is located at 8000 Rocky Fork Rd. NE, Newark 43055. To RSVP or get directions, contact Suzan Jervey at sejervey@gmail.com or 614.546.7857.
Adult Formation Series on Christian Ethics and Voting Our Episcopal tradition has a strong respect for individual conscience, and St. John’s will never tell us how to vote. Our Episcopal tradition also offers us tools for decision-making as we look toward November’s election. In this series for adults, we’ll reflect on how Episcopalians make ethical decisions, apply those methods to an issue on which the Episcopal Church has a clear position (reproductive rights) and an issue on which the Church has no clear position (marijuana legalization), and use a hypothetical school board election to consider how to decide on candidates. The series meets on Wednesday evenings, September 20 through October 11, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.; location TBA. Childcare is available by advance request; please let Gia know if you need it.
Adult Formation Series on Planning for the End of Life There are very few certainties in life. One of them is that we will all die someday, and preparing for our eventual death is a gift we can all give to our loved ones. This adult formation series will explore planning a funeral, estate planning and charitable bequests, health care decisions, and what to expect when a loved one dies. It will meet on Sunday mornings, October 1 to 29, at 10:15 a.m.; location TBA.
Newcomer Gathering Come one; come all! On Sunday, September 24th, the Newcomers Committee invites all “new” and “new-ish” attendees, to greet one another at an event in the Atrium in between the 9 and 11:15 am services. We are also counting on all members to help us welcome and connect with our St. John’s family. Please join for the fellowship, to learn about each other, and the programs at St. Johns. BONUS – if you mingle enough, you just might elude this latest church-directory “photo op,” but we encourage you come and say, “Cheese!”
St. John’s is starting up the monthly Friendship Dinners and we need your help! Typically once a month, parishioners from St. John’s prepare and serve a delicious dinner to people in our community. This endeavor began in 2010, but was put on hold during COVID. St. John’s is now ready to “start-up” under our new ministry leader, John Ross. Thank you, John! We are looking for parishioners to help us with this ministry plus share good food and warm hospitality with others! Volunteers would meet around 4:30 PM in our undercroft area, usually on the 2nd Thursday of the month to prepare the meal, set-up tables, and serve the meal to our guests, who arrive around 6:30 pm. As our previous ministry leader John Pascoe said, “That is when a special mission begins. Sharing a meal with our guests and sitting among them during the dinner is especially rewarding as we converse with each other, learning about and celebrating our similarities and differences. These personal interactions are a beautiful gift as we open our hearts and minds in understanding each other in God’s name.” Please contact John Ross at 947-254-1821 or jbross53@gmail.com if you are interested in this special way to give back to our community! Episcopal Community Ministries Emergency Food Insecurity Grant Fund – Please join us to support neighbors helping neighbors facing escalating food insecurity. Rising inflation, cutbacks in government assistance, and shrinking donations have created a perfect storm. The Diocese of Southern Ohio, through Episcopal Community Ministries (ECM), is awarding an Emergency Food Insecurity Grant in September to assist their work. Thanks to a $10,000 gift from an anonymous donor and a $10,000 award from the Bishop’s Discretionary Fund, we have a $20,000 foundation to kick off this emergency food grant. We need your help to make a difference in our local communities! Please help fund this ECM Emergency Food Insecurity grant now via the attached link: https://forms.ministryforms.net/embed.aspx?formId=7867c9c2-03a6-4f5d-a292-21f96b74675c Together our individual contributions make a real difference! Together we fund faith in action!
Coffee Hour in the Atrium – Thanks to everyone who has served as a beverage host or snack host over the past few months! The sign-up sheet in the atrium still has a few spots open for beverage hosts or snack hosts in September, and October. Hosting a Coffee Hour is fun and a great way to share fellowship. Contact Jean Duncan at 215-534-7290 or jeanduncan59@msn.com with questions or to request training on set-up or equipment operation.

Notes:
St. John’s has two separate prayer lists.
To add names to the “public” prayer list as seen above, please call the church office at 614-846-5180, or send an email to VirginiaN@stjohnsworthington.org. Names added to that sheet will remain on the prayer list for three weeks, or shorter if requested. Last names are not used. If you wish prayers to be continued, simply list the name on the prayer list again. Of course, you may always add names aloud during the prayers of the people.
There is also a “private” intercessory prayer group staffed by several volunteers from within the parish. To have your prayer request included on the prayer chain, please contact Pam Zych at 614-426-4248 and leave a message or send email to phzych4912@outlook.com
