Sunday School for Kids & Youth Has Resumed! Our Sunday school offerings for children and youth have resumed after their summer hiatus! All offerings are led by two Safe Church trained adults. Here’s the rundown:
For the first half of the 9am service, kids are invited to join us for children’s church upstairs, with a children’s sermon and time for prayer. Kids return to Kilbourne Hall in time for communion.
At 10:15am between the services, youth (12 and up) are invited to join us for Youth Roundtable, where we grab a snack and talk about the readings scheduled for that particular Sunday. Meet in the atrium.
Also at 10:15, kids aged 3-11 are invited to join us for Godly Play, a Montessori-style Sunday school program. Meet in the atrium.
Worship Has Moved to Kilbourne Hall – The plaster repairs in our beloved 192-year-old nave began on August 14. Scaffolding will be in place for about nine weeks while cracked plaster in the barrel vault is removed, any necessary repairs are made, and new plaster is laid. During that time, worship services will move to Kilbourne Hall on both Sundays and Wednesdays. Please enter via the south door or the 700 doors, or enter via the Atrium and take the elevator up to Kilbourne.
Intergenerational Activity: Baptism! – Join us on Sunday, September 17th at 10:15 am between the services in the undercroft (directly beneath Kilbourne Hall) as we hold an intergenerational event! David Burman will lead a lesson from Godly Play (our Montessori-style Sunday school program for kids) about baptism, modifying the response activities so that all ages can participate. All are welcome!
In the Garden After having the month of August off, we will again be serving dinner to the hungry at Trinity downtown on Sunday, September 24. The menu is baked spaghetti with salad, rolls and fruit. Pans with the recipe for baked spaghetti and sign-up sheets for bringing food and/or serving are located on the atrium table. If you can help with this ministry, please sign up in the atrium on Sunday, September 17. Youth Group Visits the Railway Museum – On Sunday, September 17th, our youth group (along with the youth group from St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church) will visit the Ohio Railway Museum near St. John’s! We’ll get to ride on the trolley, see the equipment, and spend time with one another. Middle and high schoolers welcome. Cost is $7 for those under 12, and $9 for those over 12 – but if cost is troublesome, let David Burman know (davidb@stjohnsworthington.org) and we can help out. Drop off at the museum (990 Proprietors Rd, Worthington, OH 43085) is at 2 pm, and pick up is at 3:30 pm.
Singles Dining Out will gather for a potluck lunch at 2:00 pm on Sunday, September 17, at Suzan Jervey’s cabin and shelter house north of Newark. Please bring a potluck dish of your choosing. Suzan will provide iced tea, coffee, paper products, serving spoons, supplies for s’mores, tables, and chairs. The cabin is 50 minutes from the church and is located at 8000 Rocky Fork Rd. Bells Across America – On Sunday, September 17, the city of Worthington will celebrate the ratification of the United States Constitution on this date in 1787 through participation in this nationwide event. You are invited to join our Mayor and the Worthington Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution at 3:45 pm on the northwest corner of the Village Green to ring bells along with the ringing of our church bells – similar to how important announcements were brought to the attention of the public in colonial days.
Facing Loss – Our third Monday meeting will take place in the St. John’s Atrium at 1:00 pm on September 18. Ann Farley, Grief Counselor at Ganzhorn, will be our presenter. Adult Formation Series on Christian Ethics and Voting Our Episcopal tradition has a strong respect for individual conscience, and St. John’s will never tell us how to vote. Our Episcopal tradition also offers us tools for decision-making as we look toward November’s election. In this series for adults, we’ll reflect on how Episcopalians make ethical decisions, apply those methods to an issue on which the Episcopal Church has a clear position (reproductive rights) and an issue on which the Church has no clear position (marijuana legalization), and use a hypothetical school board election to consider how to decide on candidates. The series meets on Wednesday evenings, September 20 through October 11, from 7:00 to 8:30 pm in the undercroft (the basement directly below Kilbourne Hall). Childcare is available by advance request; please let Gia know if you need it.
Newcomer Gathering Come one; come all! On Sunday, September 24th, the Newcomers Committee invites all “new” and “new-ish” attendees, to greet one another at an event in the Atrium in between the 9 and 11:15 am services. We are also counting on all members to help us welcome and connect with our St. John’s family. Please join for the fellowship, to learn about each other, and the programs at St. Johns. BONUS – if you mingle enough, you just might elude this latest church-directory “photo op,” but we encourage you come and say, “Cheese!”
St. John’s EEC Flower Sale – St. John’s Early Education Center is launching our first FALL fundraiser, our Mumkin and Mumster Sale! This fundraiser supports our school, which continues to provide a loving and supportive educational environment for our students — and we need your help! Flyers to order online are available in Kilbourne Hall and on the table in the atrium. Orders are due by Monday, September 25. **Pickup will be at All Saints Preschool 6770 North High St., Worthington, OH**
Chair Yoga Classes – Facing Loss is hosting parishioner Melanie Miller, a certified yoga instructor, to teach a series of Chair Yoga classes, 12:00-12:50 pm, on Tuesdays, September 26, and October 3 & 17, in the atrium, for a donation of $5-10 per class. SJEEC Fundraiser – On Wednesday, September 27th, St. John’s Early Education Center will have a fundraiser at Porch Growler (located a few doors down from CVS) from 4:00 to 9:00 pm. Porch Growler will give back 25% on every purchase made by SJEEC families and friends. They have root beer on tap as well!
Adult Formation Series on Planning for the End of Life There are very few certainties in life. One of them is that we will all die someday, and preparing for our eventual death is a gift we can all give to our loved ones. This adult formation series will explore planning a funeral, estate planning and charitable bequests, health care decisions, and what to expect when a loved one dies. It will meet on Sunday mornings, October 1 to 29, at 10:15 am in the undercroft (until Kilbourne Hall is available again after the plaster repairs in the nave are done).
Central Ohio CROP Hunger Walk is October 1st and registration is open! Walkers will gather at Scioto Audubon Metro Park (400 W Whittier St, Columbus, OH 43215) beginning at 1pm, with a send-off at 2 pm. The CROP Hunger Walk helps support the global mission of Church World Services, and 25% of the funds raised will support hunger fighting efforts in Central Ohio. Want to help? 2023 Fall Women’s Retreat, October 13-14 – This year’s theme is: Let your Joy be the Joy that comes from Hope to receive all of the gifts of Grace. Our facilitator will be Maxine Shonk, OP, a Dominican Sister of Peace with a wonderful sense of humor and a gift for storytelling, as well as a deep sense of God’s grace. The retreat will begin with dinner and fellowship at 6 pm on Friday evening, October 13, and will end at 4 pm Saturday, October 14. The retreat will be held at the Transfiguration Spirituality Center, 495 Albion Avenue, Cincinnati, OH 45246. The Center provides beddings and towels, private rooms and shared baths. Upcoming Baptism Dates— St. John’s will celebrate the sacrament of Baptism on All Saints Sunday, November 5, and on the feast of the Baptism of Our Lord, January 7. Preparation is age-appropriate for each person being baptized and involves meeting with a priest for about an hour. If you are interested in Baptism for yourself or your child, please speak with Gia or David.
St. John’s is starting up the monthly Friendship Dinners in October and we need your help! After being put on hold during COVID, St. John’s is now ready to “start-up” under our new ministry leader, John Ross. Thank you, John! We are looking for parishioners to help us with this ministry plus share good food and warm hospitality with others! Volunteers would meet around 4:30 PM in our undercroft area, usually on the 2nd Thursday of the month to prepare the meal, set-up tables, and serve the meal to our guests, who arrive around 6:30 pm. Saving your pop tabs is an easy way to do something good and make a difference in the life of a seriously ill child. Please start collecting! There is a box in the Atrium labeled Ronald McDonald House where you can leave them!

Names added to that sheet will remain on the prayer list for three weeks, or shorter if requested. Last names are not used. If you wish prayers to be continued, simply list the name on the prayer list again. Of course, you may always add names aloud during the prayers of the people.
