This Week at St. John’s
October 1, 2023
Sunday School for Kids & Youth Has Resumed! Our Sunday school offerings for children and youth have resumed after their summer hiatus! All offerings are led by two Safe Church trained adults. Here’s the rundown:
For the first half of the 9am service, kids are invited to join us for children’s church upstairs, with a children’s sermon and time for prayer. Kids return to Kilbourne Hall in time for communion.
At 10:15am between the services, youth (12 and up) are invited to join us for Youth Roundtable, where we grab a snack and talk about the readings scheduled for that particular Sunday. Meet in the atrium.
Also at 10:15, kids aged 3-11 are invited to join us for Godly Play, a Montessori-style Sunday school program. Meet in the atrium.
Worship Has Moved to Kilbourne Hall – The plaster repairs in the nave began on August 14 and will continue for about nine weeks while cracked plaster in the barrel vault is removed, any necessary repairs are made, and new plaster is laid. During this time, Sunday and Wednesday worship services will be held in Kilbourne Hall. Please enter via the south door or the 700 doors, or enter via the Atrium and take the elevator up to Kilbourne.
Adult Formation Series on Planning for the End of Life – There are very few certainties in life. One of them is that we will all die someday, and preparing for our eventual death is a gift we can all give to our loved ones. This adult formation series will explore planning a funeral, estate planning and charitable bequests, health care decisions, and what to expect when a loved one dies. It will meet on Sunday mornings, October 1 to 29, at 10:15 am in the undercroft (until Kilbourne Hall is available again after the plaster repairs in the nave are done).
Sunday Afternoon Youth Group – 6th-12th graders are welcome to join us for youth group on Sunday afternoons! This Sunday, October 1st, we’ll gather at St. John’s in Worthington, in the carriage house at the south end of our parking lot. There will be snacks! Questions? Contact David Burman at davidb@stjohnsworthington.org
Celtic Service Returns October 1 – Please join us in the St. John’s churchyard at 5 pm Sunday, October 1st for the first lay-led Celtic Service of the 23-24 season. This is a quiet, contemplative service based on the Iona Abbey Worship Book. The theme on Oct 1 is again All Creatures Great and Small. We will be celebrating our non-human friends and welcome any four-legged well-behaved guests to join us! Please bring your own chair if possible; we will have extras for those who need them. We will also be collecting donations to buy dog and cat food for the Worthington Food Pantry as we did last year. In case of inclement weather, we will gather in the atrium, unfortunately without our beloved guests. ~The Celtic Fellowship
Central Ohio CROP Hunger Walk is October 1st and registration is open! Walkers will gather at Scioto Audubon Metro Park (400 W Whittier St, Columbus, OH 43215) beginning at 1pm, with a send-off at 2 pm. The CROP Hunger Walk helps support the global mission of Church World Services, and 25% of the funds raised will support hunger fighting efforts in Central Ohio. Want to help? Please register at https://tinyurl.com/46pnxzh9 and take one step closer to ending hunger once and for all:
Chair Yoga Classes – Facing Loss is hosting parishioner Melanie Miller, a certified yoga instructor, to teach a series of Chair Yoga classes, 12:00-12:50 pm, on Tuesdays, October 3 and 17, in the atrium, for a donation of $5-10 per class. Sign up on the sheet on the table in the atrium, or contact Cynthia Woodbeck at 614-638-5054 or cwoodbeck235@gmail.com Questions welcome.
Adult Formation Series on Christian Ethics and Voting Our Episcopal tradition has a strong respect for individual conscience, and St. John’s will never tell us how to vote. Our Episcopal tradition also offers us tools for decision-making as we look toward November’s election. In this series for adults, we’ll reflect on how Episcopalians make ethical decisions, apply those methods to an issue on which the Episcopal Church has a clear position (reproductive rights) and an issue on which the Church has no clear position (marijuana legalization), and use a hypothetical school board election to consider how to decide on candidates. The series meets on Wednesday evenings, October 4 and 11, from 7:00 to 8:30 pm in the undercroft (the basement directly below Kilbourne Hall). Childcare is available by advance request; please let Gia know if you need it.
St. John’s is restarting the Friendship Dinners on October 12th and we need your help! There is a signup sheet in the atrium for volunteers to sign up for various shifts and various ways to help. Thanks to the parishioners who have already signed to help with preparing the meal, setting up tables, serving the meal to our guests, and/or cleaning up. We also need someone to greet our guests out front and guide them to the undercroft and someone to make nametags for our guests. We hope all helpers will also join our guests to share a meal and fellowship. Please sign up or contact John Ross at 847-254-1821 or jbross53@gmail.com if you are interested in this special way to give back to our community! The Outreach and Social Justice Committee
2023 Fall Women’s Retreat, October 13-14 – I am both happy and sad to announce that we have a full house for the Women’s Retreat! Happy to have the largest group in quite a while, but sad if you were hoping to join us and didn’t quite make it in this time. The retreat is an annual event, so hopefully you can join us next year. If you would still like to be on a waitlist for this year’s retreat, contact Donna DeRemer-Hissrich at 614-203-3562 or donna.hissrich@gmail.com.
St. Johns Book Club will be starting on Zoom on Wednesday October 18, at 7 pm. We will be studying the poetry of W.B. Yeats. If you are interested in being a participant, there are a few things you can do to prepare. Pick out five of your favorite Yeats poems and send the list to me. From these lists we will select some of the poems to be discussed this fall. If you are in need of a book of Yeats poems contact me. I have two that can be had for keeps. I am looking forward to this, hope you are also. Teri Foley-Nelson, foleynelson1@sbcglobal.net
Blessing of Animals – In honor of the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, lover of all God’s creatures, St. John’s will offer animal blessings on Sunday, October 22, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. as part of Experience Worthington’s pet-themed Sunday Funday. Look for our table on the southeast corner of the Village Green, and bring your favorite creature for a blessing!
Upcoming Baptism Dates— St. John’s will celebrate the sacrament of Baptism on All Saints Sunday, November 5, and on the feast of the Baptism of Our Lord, January 7. Preparation is age-appropriate for each person being baptized and involves meeting with a priest for about an hour. If you are interested in Baptism for yourself or your child, please speak with Gia or David.
Suggested Grocery Items for Food Pantry Donations – for next week: macaroni & cheese, shampoo. You can place your food and toiletry donations in the food baskets in the atrium. You can also give online at www.worthingtonresourcepantry.org/donate/ or www.gladdenhouse.org/food-pantry.
Flowers for this week are given by Margaret Allen, Arik Wieland, and Emary Spencer in thanksgiving for the life of Bonnie Spencer Wieland.
The email address for VirginiaN@StJohnsWorthington.org is still active in the interim, and will be checked several times a week by staff and volunteers.
Centering Prayer – Mondays, 1:00 p.m. Click this Zoom link (Meeting ID: 876 4837 0994; Passcode: 408290; One tap mobile +13126266799,,87648370994#,,,,*408290#). If you are interested, contact Teri Foley-Nelson, at foleynelson1@sbcglobal.net.
The Readings for Next Sunday Are – Isaiah 5:1-7, Psalm 80:7-14, Philippians 3:4b-14, Matthew 21:33-46
Save Pop Tabs and Help the Ronald McDonald House – It’s not just an urban myth; Ronald McDonald House really does generate thousands of dollars from their pop tab collection program every year. Saving your pop tabs is an easy way to do something good and make a difference in the life of a seriously ill child. Please start collecting! There is a box in the Atrium labeled Ronald McDonald House where you can leave them!
Kroger Community Rewards – One of the ways Kroger partners with their neighborhoods is through their Kroger Community Rewards program. This program donates to St. John’s based on the shopping you do every day. Once you link your Kroger Card to St. John’s Episcopal Church, all you have to do is shop at Kroger and swipe your Shopper’s Card. The website address is www.krogercommunityrewards.com. Instructions for setting up an account and linking your card are available in a stand at the back of the table in the atrium.
Do You Have Family or Friends Who You Want Included on the Weekly Prayer List? If so, please contact the office at VirginiaN@stjohnsworthington.org or 614-846-5180, with their first names. Names will remain on the list for three weeks unless there are additional instructions. If you want longer term prayer by the intercessory prayer group, please contact Jo Pascoe at 614-306-7983 and leave a message or send email to twopas@aol.com.
Pastoral Care Concerns – If you have a pastoral care concern, please contact one of the clergy. Gia may be reached at 614-846-5180, ext. 302, 220-219-1880, or GiaHM@StJohnsWorthington.org. David may be reached at 614-846-5180, ext. 308, 220-219-1880 or, or DavidB@stjohnsworthington.org. 220 area code is a local number.

Notes:
St. John’s has two separate prayer lists.
To add names to the “public” prayer list as seen above, please call the church office at 614-846-5180, or send an email to VirginiaN@stjohnsworthington.org. Names added to that sheet will remain on the prayer list for three weeks, or shorter if requested. Last names are not used. If you wish prayers to be continued, simply list the name on the prayer list again. Of course, you may always add names aloud during the prayers of the people.
There is also a “private” intercessory prayer group staffed by several volunteers from within the parish. To have your prayer request included on the prayer chain, please contact Jo Pascoe at 614-306-7983 or send email to twopas@aol.com
