This Week at St. John’s – October 29, 2023

This Week at St. John’s
October 29, 2023

Sunday School for Kids & Youth – All offerings are led by two Safe Church trained adults.

For the first half of the 9 am service, kids are invited to join us for children’s church upstairs, with a children’s sermon and time for prayer. Kids return to Kilbourne Hall in time for communion.
At 10:15 am between the services, 6th -12th graders are invited to join us for Youth Roundtable, where we grab a snack and talk about the readings scheduled for that particular Sunday. Meet in the atrium.
Also at 10:15, kids aged 3-11 are invited to join us for Godly Play, a Montessori-style Sunday school program. Meet in the atrium.

Welcome Bella Olmstead! – Our new Parish Engagement Coordinator started October 23 and is getting oriented to St. John’s! Her email is Bellao@stjohnsworthington.org. Feel free to stop by and introduce yourself.

Adult Formation Series on Planning for the End of Life – This Sunday, October 29, Brad Jackson from Capital City Hospice will talk about advance healthcare directives. A bonus session will be offered on Sunday, November 12, when Tom Moushey will talk about charitable giving and IRAs. These adult formation sessions will meet at 10:15 am in Kilbourne Hall.

Homelessness 101: A Forum on October 29 – Many of our churches and church members interact with unhoused people every day. There are both joys and challenges that arise in communities that are involved in the lives of unhoused people, and we sometimes need help negotiating those challenges. This Sunday, October 29, at 12 noon, Douglas Argue, Managing Director of Coalition on Homelessness and Housing in Ohio (COHHIO) will be presenting Homelessness 101, a forum that is designed to educate community members about homelessness and working with unhoused people. The forum will take place at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church (30 W. Woodruff Avenue). Please join us! ~Karl Stevens

Sunday Afternoon Youth Group – 6th-12th graders are welcome to join us for youth group on Sunday afternoons! This Sunday, October 29, we’ll gather at St. Johns in the carriage house from 2:00-3:30 pm. There will be snacks! Questions? Contact David Burman at davidb@stjohnsworthington.org

Stewardship Campaign Update – The first four weeks of the Stewardship campaign have brought the opportunity to hear from many of you about your excitement for the new things God is bringing forth in our midst, including a blossoming partnership with B.R.E.A.D. and the restarting of the Friendship Dinners. Our sincere gratitude to those of you who have already communicated your intent to support St. John’s in 2024 by filling out a pledge form. We appreciate your faithfulness and your generosity! If we haven’t heard from you yet, we ask that

you prayerfully consider your financial commitment to St. John’s for the coming year and then make your pledge as soon as possible, either by completing and mailing a pledge form to the church (pledge forms can be found on the table in the atrium) or by filling out the form online. Every gift or pledge is important, and hearing from you soon will help us plan St. John’s budget for 2024. We also invite you to a special coffee hour on All Saints Day, November 5, to celebrate the conclusion of our campaign. We will thank you for making a commitment to financially support St. John’s in 2024 and celebrate the programs and ministries that your generosity will continue to

make possible! ~St. John’s Stewardship Committee

New Nametags Are In! – If you signed up for a nametag in recent months, please check the nametag screens in the atrium, where the nametags are clipped in roughly alphabetical order. Thanks for your patience!

St. John’s Book Club – Save Wednesday evenings at 7 pm for a discussion of the poetry of W.B. Yeats. We will meet again on Zoom on November 1. Click this Zoom link (Meeting ID: 894 4370 8009; Passcode: 266525; one tap mobile +13126266799, 89443708009#,,,,*266525#) To ask questions, contact Teri Foley-Nelson, at foleynelson1@sbcglobal/net.

Celtic Service of Thanksgiving on November 5 – Please join us in the St. John’s atrium at 5 pm Sunday, November 5, for the Celtic Service. This is a short, contemplative service in which the circle of worshippers participates in the service. It is based on the Iona Abbey Worship Book and includes liturgy, meditation, music, and prayers of concern. This service is in honor of St. Francis. You are invited to stay afterwards for a little conversation and hospitality.

All Souls Day Observance – A lay-led service of remembrance with special music will be held in the nave at 6:30 pm on Thursday, November 2. Please send the names of those loved ones who have passed on and you would like to be remembered to Cynthia Woodbeck at cwoodbeck235@gmail.com by Tuesday, October 31.  They need not have passed on recently.

Philadelphia 11 Documentary to Screen in Columbus on November 8 – In 1974, a group of 11 women and their supporters organized their ordination to become Episcopal priests in an act of civil disobedience. This story is told in a compelling new documentary, The Philadelphia Eleven. The feature documentary film will screen here in Columbus on Wednesday, November 8! The screening will take place at Phoenix Theatres at Lennox Town Center at 7:00 pm. The screening is free and open to the public, but we do need a headcount so that we can upgrade to a larger screening room if we need to. Please go to http://bit.ly/46hSNRK to register for the screening.

Friendship Dinner – The Friendship Dinner on Thursday, November 9, will celebrate Thanksgiving with our guests. We need 1 additional volunteer on the 9th to help with food preparation, 3 volunteers for set-up, and 3 volunteers for cleanup. There is a signup sheet on the table in the atrium. Come and help celebrate Thanksgiving with our Worthington neighbors! We also need four 9” pies, two apple and two pumpkin – anyone who would like to donate a pie would be greatly appreciated. Please sign-up in the atrium or contact John Ross, text 847-254-1821 or email jbross53@gmail.com.

The Annual Christmas Giving Tree Project – We are so excited to be able to continue this valuable outreach service to our neighbors at Worthington Kilbourne Middle School! The staff is hard at work contacting families and creating a list of gifts for some of the KMS students and their siblings. We will be setting up a display in the Atrium beginning Sunday, November 12, with tags you can take, listing the gift requests. Once again, if you prefer not to shop, we can shop for you if you want to donate gift cards to places like Walmart, Target or Kohl’s, or send in a check, early enough for us to do that shopping. If you have, or want to purchase, large gift bags, gift boxes or tissue paper, those are greatly appreciated for packaging up the gifts for the school. Thank you in advance for helping some very needy families make this Christmas very special!

St. John’s Chair Yoga – will be offered in the atrium on Tuesdays, November 14 and 28 at 12 noon. Certified instructor Melanie Miller will lead us. Donate $5 or $10 if you wish. Bring a blanket to put under your feet. Contact Cynthia Woodbeck at 614-638-5054 or cwoodbeck235@gmail.com with questions.

“Adventurer’s Guide to the Bible” High School Retreat – Students in grades 9-12 are invited to gather at Procter Center November 17-19 for a weekend immersing themselves in the 5th Edition of Dungeons & Dragons. The campaign runs parallel to the events of the Bible, but the way the plot unfolds is up to you! Experienced players and those new to the game are welcome. You can register here. The retreat will be led by the Rev. Christopher C. Richardson, Priest-in-Charge at St. John’s on Town Street.

Advent Formation Series – Are you ready to immerse yourself in Advent Formation as we prepare for the coming of Christ? Beginning on Wednesday, November 29, (before the first Sunday of Advent), Catherine Duffy will lead a four-part book study of Amy-Jill Levine’s text Light of the World: A Beginner’s Guide to Advent. We will begin with Holden Evening Prayer at 7:00 pm and then discuss one chapter of the book each week for four consecutive Wednesdays, concluding on December 20th. St. John’s will provide books for those who RSVP in advance; the book can also be purchased online in print or electronic forms. Email Bellao@stjohnsworthington.org to order a book or sign up on the table in the atrium by November 15th. Books will be available by Sunday, November 19th. Childcare is available upon request, simply mention that in your RSVP.

Youth Lock-In – 6th-12th graders are invited to join us for an overnight lock-in at the church on the evening of Saturday, December 2, alongside youth from St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church! We’ll gather at the church around 6 pm, have dinner, talk faith, and play games, and then divide up to sleep in a few different spaces throughout the church building. Then we’ll worship on Sunday! If you are a teen or are related to one, talk to David Burman to RSVP at davidb@stjohnsworthington.org.

Coffee Hour – Thanks to everyone who has served as a beverage host or snack host over the past few months! The sign-up sheet in the atrium still has a few spots open for beverage hosts or snack hosts in November and December.  Hosting a Coffee Hour is fun and a great way to share fellowship.  Contact Jean Duncan at 215-534-7290 or jeanduncan59@msn.com with questions or to request training on set-up or equipment operation.

Al Ahli Hospital in Gaza is a ministry of the Diocese of Jerusalem. Despite damage to the hospital from rocket fire, Al Ahli continues to serve the people of Gaza in their time of greatest distress, and our donations will provide desperately needed medicine and supplies. We can help by contributing to the Middle East Fund of Episcopal Relief and Development.

Suggested Grocery Items for Food Pantry Donations – for next week: canned soup, facial tissues, & a Thanksgiving dinner item. You can place your food, toiletry, and baby donations in the food baskets in the atrium. You can also give online at www.worthingtonresourcepantry.org/donate/ or www.gladdenhouse.org/food-pantry.

Flowers for this week are given by Anne Davidson in thanksgiving for the birthday of her daughter Jane Windler and by Charlie and Betsy Warner in loving memory of Charlotte and Landon Warner.

Notes:

St. John’s has two separate prayer lists.

To add names to the “public” prayer list as seen above, please call the church office at 614-846-5180, or send an email to Bellao@stjohnsworthington.org. Names added to that sheet will remain on the prayer list for three weeks, or shorter if requested. Last names are not used. If you wish prayers to be continued, simply list the name on the prayer list again. Of course, you may always add names aloud during the prayers of the people.

There is also a “private” intercessory prayer group staffed by several volunteers from within the parish. To have your prayer request included on the prayer chain, please contact Jo Pascoe at 614-306-7983 or send email to twopas@aol.com
