This Week at St. John’s
January 21, 2024
Sunday School for Kids & Youth – All offerings are led by two Safe Church trained adults.
For the first half of the 9 am service, kids are invited to join us for children’s church upstairs, with a children’s sermon and time for prayer. Kids return to Nave in time for communion.
At 10:15 am between the services, 6th -12th graders are invited to join us for Youth Roundtable, where we grab a snack and talk about the readings scheduled for that particular Sunday. Meet in the atrium.
Also at 10:15, kids aged 3-11 are invited to join us for Godly Play, a Montessori-style Sunday school program. Meet in the atrium.
Sunday Afternoon Youth Group – 6th-12th graders are welcome to join us for youth group on Sunday afternoons! This Sunday, January 21, we’ll gather at St. John’s from 2:00-3:30 pm. There will be snacks! Questions? Contact David Burman at davidb@stjohnsworthington.org
Adult Formation – Salem Witch Trials – Sarah Iles Johnston will follow up her lectures earlier this year on the anthropological approach to understanding evil with a historically-focused lecture on the Salem witchcraft trials. The next meeting will be on January 21 in Kilbourne Hall at 10:15 am. She’ll begin by looking at Protestant attitudes towards witchcraft in the decades preceding the trials (spoiler alert: they definitely believed that witches existed), then go through what happened in Salem itself and how ministers were involved. She’ll finish with a quick look at the aftermath.
Facing Loss with SJE/WPC – Renewed Faith for the New Year will entice you to our fourth Monday casual Lunch at the Worthington La Chatelaine at 12:00 noon on January 22 for a robust meal and good company guaranteed! Questions to Cynthia Woodbeck, SJE, (cwoodbeck235@gmail or Louann Shearer, WPC, at jedse@wpcnow.org)
Arts and Crafts Ministry – Our ministry is a group of artists and crafts people who enjoy creating a variety of visual arts including quilts, paintings, lace making, books, needlework, woodwork, photographs and everything else. We get together to share and affirm our God-given talents. We invite any new parishioners who might like to join our ministry. We will meet Tuesday, January 23, in the Atrium at 6:30 pm. Please bring any old or new projects to share. Any questions, call or text Sue Sheets, 614-266-0972.
Gia Will Be Away from Wednesday, January 17, through Wednesday, January 24. David is available to attend to pastoral needs in her absence.
Double Header! – Before the Worthington Chamber Orchestra’s next concert, “Stories of Hope,” there will be a related CommunityConnect event about the Black influence on classical music and the history of the Black community in Worthington — with music! It will take place at St. John A.M.E. church on Saturday, January 20, at 2:00 pm. The WCO concert, “Stories of Hope,” will be at the Worthington United Methodist Church on Sunday, February 4, at 5:00 pm. The CommunityConnect event is free, though tickets for both events are available at www.worthingtonchamberorchestra.com.
Singles Dining Out – Singles Dining Out will gather at Anna’s Greek Cuisine on Tuesday, January 23, at 6:00 pm. Anna’s is located at 7370 Sawmill Road, Dublin, Ohio 43235. You can find Anna’s varied dinner menu at www.annasgreekcuisine.com/dinner. Anna’s menu includes vegetarian and gluten free options. Please RSVP to Karen Kuhr at 614-565-8988 or karenkuhr@gmail.com so she can let Anna’s know the size of our group. We hope you can join us! Singles Dining Out is an informal group of St. John’s parishioners and friends, always happy to welcome new participants. Singles and married individuals who will be attending without their spouse are welcome to participate. Feel free to invite a friend who is not a member of St. John’s.
In the Garden Feeding Ministry at Trinity Church – Thanks to all those who contributed food for Christmas Eve In the Garden and to those who went to Trinity to serve to downtown residents. As confirmation of how much appreciated our small act of service is, here is the heartbreaking remark made by one of the Christmas Eve diners who thanked us before departing. “Columbus is the best place in this country to be homeless because of places like this.” We will be serving again on Sunday, January 28. Our menu will be a chicken and vegetable casserole, rolls, salad, and fruit. Please sign up in the atrium on the 14th or 21st to bring food to church or to serve downtown on the 28th. There will be pans on the table with the recipe for those willing to make a cooked dish. As always, the generosity of St. John’s parishioners can be counted on.
What does a house wear? – Find out the answer to this riddle and much more on Sunday, January 28, during Coffee Hour in the Atrium. Special guest, Kristina Ward, from Habitat For Humanity Mid-Ohio will be visiting St. John’s to answer questions and share information about the impact that Habitat For Humanity is having in the Columbus area. As a member of the Northside Partnership, St. John’s parishioners volunteer hands-on work day hours and donate financial support to Habitat Mid-Ohio. But Habitat is so much more! Hear about opportunities to aid housing insecure families and sign a building stud with words of encouragement. Be sure to stop by to show your support for this outreach ministry!
Save the date! – Join us on February 3 at 6:00 pm for a Mardi Gras Saturday Supper! Sign up sheet in the atrium
Stories of Hope! – Worthington Chamber Orchestra’s second concert of the season, will take place on Sunday, February 4, at 5:00 pm at the Worthington United Methodist Church. The program, including the premiere of a commissioned work, consists largely of works by Black composers. St. John’s Debbie Price is a member of the orchestra.
St. John’s 220th Anniversary – In February 1804, a group of Episcopalian settlers from Connecticut held the first services for a new church they called St. John’s in Worthington and Parts Adjacent. We’ll celebrate our 220th anniversary on Sunday, February 4, at both 9:00 and 11:15 am, with a festive coffee hour (i.e. cake) between services. On the actual anniversary, Tuesday, February 6, at 7:00 p.m., we will hold a celebratory evening including St. John’s choir singing movements from Franz Schubert’s Mass in G and a newly commissioned piece in honor of St. John’s 220th anniversary. Admission is free; a free-will offering will be accepted to support St. John’s music ministry. Please join us to celebrate this milestone in our congregation’s life!
Vestry Election – Many thanks to Carol Newcomb Alutto, Susan Mancini, Keith Redmill, Trudi Snediker, Laura Wallace, and Dana Whitley for their willingness to share their time and talents by agreeing to run for vestry, and additional thanks to Star Blackford and Bob Shelly for their willingness to share their time and talents by agreeing to run for senior warden. God gives different gifts to different people, and our slate of candidates offers a combination of all those varied gifts, which will enable us to do God’s New Thing at St. John’s in 2024. We will all have an opportunity to Meet the Candidates between services on February 4, and voting will occur on February 11 and 18. St. John’s bylaws do not permit proxy voting, but absentee ballots can be sent to anyone who is not able to vote in person. Contact Bella Olmstead in the parish office (bellao@stjohnsworthington.org or 614-846-5180) to request an absentee ballot; the ballot must be received in the parish office by US mail by Friday, February 16, or returned to the locked dropbox on the south steps by Sunday, February 18, at 12:30 pm.
Give Blood, Save Lives! – St. John’s will host a blood drive on Wednesday, February 7, 2:00-7:00 pm, in Kilbourne Hall, with Versiti Blood Center, the main supplier of blood to the Ohio State University Wexner Center. Someone needs blood every 2 seconds, and your donation may help a NICU baby, cancer fighter, sickle cell warrior, transplant patient, trauma survivor, or someone else. You can sign up for a time to donate at https://donate.ohio.versiti.org/donor/schedules/drive_schedule/219362. If you would like to be a greeter to help welcome our donors on February 7, please contact Mary Bailey at 614-619-1803 or mphbailey.3@gmail.com.
Eat Pancakes & Bury Alleluias! – This year we are resuming a pre-covid tradition at St. John’s: a Shrove Tuesday pancake supper! Join us on Tuesday, February 13 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm – John Ross will be the lead pancake maker, and Carrie Troester and David Burman will lead the children in burying alleluias in expectation of that word’s return at Easter. Everyone (and especially kids) are welcome!
Sign Up for Lent Series – As our church year turns to solemn repentance in preparation for Easter, Gia will lead a discussion of Rabbi Danya Ruttenberg’s book On Repentance and Repair: Making Amends in an Unapologetic World. Rabbi Ruttenberg offers us a way to apologize for our wrongdoing and make amends that is genuine and healing for both the sinner and the one sinned against, in everything from interpersonal relationships to the gravest sins of an entire society. The series will meet on Wednesday evenings, February 21 through March 20, at 7:00 pm in Kilbourne Hall. So that we can order books, RSVP to Gia or Bella, or sign up on the sheet in the Atrium by February 7. Childcare is available by advance request; please let Gia know if you need it.

Notes:
St. John’s has two separate prayer lists.
To add names to the “public” prayer list as seen above, please call the church office at 614-846-5180, or send an email to Bellao@stjohnsworthington.org. Names added to that sheet will remain on the prayer list for three weeks, or shorter if requested. Last names are not used. If you wish prayers to be continued, simply list the name on the prayer list again. Of course, you may always add names aloud during the prayers of the people.
There is also a “private” intercessory prayer group staffed by several volunteers from within the parish. To have your prayer request included on the prayer chain, please contact Jo Pascoe at 614-306-7983 or send email to twopas@aol.com
