This Week at St. John’s
January 28, 2024
Sunday School for Kids & Youth – All offerings are led by two Safe Church trained adults.
For the first half of the 9 am service, kids are invited to join us for children’s church upstairs, with a children’s sermon and time for prayer. Kids return to Nave in time for communion.
At 10:15 am between the services, 6th -12th graders are invited to join us for Youth Roundtable, where we grab a snack and talk about the readings scheduled for that particular Sunday. Meet in the atrium.
Also at 10:15, kids aged 3-11 are invited to join us for Godly Play, a Montessori-style Sunday school program. Meet in the atrium.
Sunday Afternoon Youth Group – 6th-12th graders are welcome to join us for youth group on Sunday afternoons! This Sunday, January 28, we’ll gather at St. Stephens’s from 2:00-3:30 pm. There will be snacks! Questions? Contact David Burman at davidb@stjohnsworthington.org
In the Garden Feeding Ministry at Trinity Church – Thanks to all those who contributed food for Christmas Eve In the Garden and to those who went to Trinity to serve to downtown residents. As confirmation of how much appreciated our small act of service is, here is the heartbreaking remark made by one of the Christmas Eve diners who thanked us before departing. “Columbus is the best place in this country to be homeless because of places like this.” We will be serving again on Sunday, January 28. Our menu will be a chicken and vegetable casserole, rolls, salad, and fruit.
What does a house wear? – Find out the answer to this riddle and much more on Sunday, January 28, during Coffee Hour in the Atrium. Special guest, Kristina Ward, from Habitat For Humanity Mid-Ohio will be visiting St. John’s to answer questions and share information about the impact that Habitat For Humanity is having in the Columbus area. As a member of the Northside Partnership, St. John’s parishioners volunteer hands-on work day hours and donate financial support to Habitat Mid-Ohio. But Habitat is so much more! Hear about opportunities to aid housing insecure families and sign a building stud with words of encouragement. Be sure to stop by to show your support for this outreach ministry!
No Wednesday Worship January 31 as clergy will be away for a retreat.
Taste of Italy – Order your Italian dinner now and enjoy it on February 1st while giving back to St. John’s Early Education Center! A portion of each purchase will return to our school while you enjoy a delicious meal prepared by The Berwick. There are dinner options, as well as a la carte items and dessert. Please click on the link to be directed to The Berwick’s page for instructions and ordering. Pickup your dinner (hot or cold) in our parking lot on the first of February (Thursday) by the purple doors between 5:00 and 6:00 pm. Please feel free to share the link with friends as well. https://the-berwick.com/taste-of-italy-tour-menu
St. John’s 220th Anniversary – In February 1804, a group of Episcopalian settlers from Connecticut held the first services for a new church they called St. John’s in Worthington and Parts Adjacent. We’ll celebrate our 220th anniversary on Sunday, February 4, at both 9:00 and 11:15 am, with a festive coffee hour (i.e. cake) between services. On the actual anniversary, Tuesday, February 6, at 7:00 p.m., we will hold a celebratory evening including St. John’s choir singing movements from Franz Schubert’s Mass in G and a newly commissioned piece in honor of St. John’s 220th anniversary. Admission is free; a free-will offering will be accepted to support St. John’s music ministry. Please join us to celebrate this milestone in our congregation’s life!
Meet the Candidates! – St. John’s Parish Elections for Senior Warden (2-year term) and four new Vestry Members (3-year term) will be held before and after services on February 11 and February 18. You can “Meet the Candidates” in the church between services on Sunday, February 4. First, we’ll celebrate the 220th anniversary of St. John’s with cake in the atrium right after the 9 am service, then gather in the church to meet the candidates at about 10:25 am – no food or drinks in the church, please! The “Meet the Candidates Forum” will be livestreamed at the same link as 11:15 am worship. You can pick up a Vestry Candidates brochure with bios and photos on the table in the atrium, or contact Bella Olmstead in the Church office (614-846-5180 or bellao@stjohnsworthington.org) if you need to receive it by mail. St. John’s bylaws do not permit proxy voting, but absentee ballots can be sent to anyone who is not able to vote in person. Contact Bella Olmstead in the parish office to request an absentee ballot; the ballot must be received in the parish office by US mail by Friday, February 16, or returned to the locked dropbox on the south steps by Sunday, February 18, at 12:30 pm.
Stories of Hope! – Worthington Chamber Orchestra’s second concert of the season, will take place on Sunday, February 4, at 5:00 pm at the Worthington United Methodist Church. The program, including the premiere of a commissioned work, consists largely of works by Black composers. St. John’s Debbie Price is a member of the orchestra.
Celtic Service Date Change! – In February, the Celtic service will be held on the second Sunday, February 11th, instead of the first Sunday. One time only. After February, the service will go back to its usual first Sunday of the month. The Celtic Fellowship
Give Blood, Save Lives! – St. John’s will host a blood drive on Wednesday, February 7, 2:00-7:00 pm, in Kilbourne Hall, with Versiti Blood Center, the main supplier of blood to the Ohio State University Wexner Center. Someone needs blood every 2 seconds, and your donation may help a NICU baby, cancer fighter, sickle cell warrior, transplant patient, trauma survivor, or someone else. You can sign up for a time to donate at https://donate.ohio.versiti.org/donor/schedules/drive_schedule/219362. If you would like to be a greeter to help welcome our donors on February 7, please contact Mary Bailey at 614-619-1803 or mphbailey.3@gmail.com.
Volunteers needed for the February 8 Friendship Dinner – We need a minimum of 3 volunteers for set-up and 3 volunteers for cleanup. The sign-up sheet is on the table in the atrium. Please sign up in the Atrium or contact John Ross by text at 847-254-1821 or email jbross53@gmail.com. Due to the large number of spam calls I receive, I do not answer calls for numbers I am not familiar with, so texting or email is the best way to contact me. Thank you for all your support.
Eat Pancakes & Bury Alleluias! – This year we are resuming a pre-Covid tradition at St. John’s: a Shrove Tuesday pancake supper! Join us on Tuesday, February 13 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm – John Ross will be the lead pancake maker, and Carrie Troester and David Burman will lead the children in burying alleluias in expectation of that word’s return at Easter. Everyone (and especially kids) are welcome! Signup sheets will be in the atrium.
The Consecration of the Tenth Bishop of Southern Ohio will occur on February 17 at the Columbus Convention Center. This a very large service with people attending from all over the country. RSVPs are not required, but will be very helpful for the planning team, especially if you need childcare. Go to https://form.jotform.com/233523865584162 to sign up. In order to present our best selves to our visitors, many volunteers are needed. Sign Up for Lent Series – As our church year turns to solemn repentance in preparation for Easter, Gia will lead a discussion of Rabbi Danya Ruttenberg’s book On Repentance and Repair: Making Amends in an Unapologetic World. Rabbi Ruttenberg offers us a way to apologize for our wrongdoing and make amends that is genuine and healing for both the sinner and the one sinned against, in everything from interpersonal relationships to the gravest sins of an entire society. The series will meet on Wednesday evenings, February 21 through March 20, at 7:00 pm in Kilbourne Hall. So that we can order books, RSVP to Gia or Bella, or sign up on the sheet in the Atrium by February 7. Childcare is available by advance request; please let Gia know if you need it.
Save the date! – Mark Your Calendar! St John’s Saturday Supper will return on March 9 at 6 PM in Kilbourne Hall as we celebrate St Patrick’s Day. Our main course will be corned beef courtesy of John Ross, with attendees bringing the side dishes and desserts. The sign-up sheet is on the atrium table. All are invited!

Notes:
St. John’s has two separate prayer lists.
To add names to the “public” prayer list as seen above, please call the church office at 614-846-5180, or send an email to Bellao@stjohnsworthington.org. Names added to that sheet will remain on the prayer list for three weeks, or shorter if requested. Last names are not used. If you wish prayers to be continued, simply list the name on the prayer list again. Of course, you may always add names aloud during the prayers of the people.
There is also a “private” intercessory prayer group staffed by several volunteers from within the parish. To have your prayer request included on the prayer chain, please contact Jo Pascoe at 614-306-7983 or send email to twopas@aol.com
