This Week at St. John’s
March 10, 2024

Sunday School for Kids & Youth – All offerings are led by two Safe Church trained adults.

For the first half of the 9 am service, kids are invited to join us for children’s church upstairs, with a children’s sermon and time for prayer. Kids return to Nave in time for communion.
At 10:15 am between the services, 6th -12th graders are invited to join us for Youth Roundtable, where we grab a snack and talk about the readings scheduled for that particular Sunday. Meet in the atrium.
Also at 10:15, kids aged 3-11 are invited to join us for Godly Play, a Montessori-style Sunday school program. Meet in the atrium.

Sunday Afternoon Youth Group – 6th-12th graders are welcome to join us for youth group on Sunday afternoons! This Sunday, March 10, we’ll gather at St. Stephen’s from 2:00-3:30 pm. There will be snacks! Questions? Contact David Burman at davidb@stjohnsworthington.org

Flower Sale – On February 27th, St. John’s Early Education Center (EEC) launched their main fundraiser of the year, the SPRING FLOWER SALE, just in time for changing seasons and warmer weather! This fundraiser supports our preschool, which continues to provide a loving and supportive educational environment for its students. The EEC is also looking to update the outdoor play space with proceeds from this fundraiser, which will also benefit the Children & Youth programs at St. John’s. You can find the forms on the table in the Atrium

Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Ohio (RMHC) has been keeping families close when a child is in the hospital by providing family centered care that fosters health and well-being for the whole family.  Please welcome Mike Amfahr, a longtime volunteer at RMHC, to St. John’s on Sunday, March 10, during Coffee Hour. Mike will be in the Atrium sharing RMHC’s vision of excellence in providing essential services to families whose children are facing medical challenges.

From Holocaust to Gaza and Beyond, March 11 at 7pm Worthington Presbyterian Church – Experience an enlightening evening this Monday, March 11 at Worthington Presbyterian Church with WPC Deacon Melissa Robol. Discover the origins of today’s conflicts in Palestine, from discussions on the Holocaust to Gaza and beyond. Join us for an educational, reflective, and prayerful session from 7 – 8 pm in the Fellowship Hall. Refreshments will be served at 6:30pm.

Taft Lecture Watch Party at St. Stephen’s – St. Stephen’s – Columbus and the Creation Care and Environmental Justice Commission are pleased to announce a watch party and discussion for the Christ Church Cathedral 2024 Taft lecture by Dr. Robert Bullard. We will gather starting at 6:30 pm on Wednesday, March 13, for the 7:00-8:30 pm lecture. If you are not able to drive to Cincinnati to see the lecture in person, this will be a great opportunity to hear this pioneer of environmental justice speak. Please contact Rev. Craig Foster ccej@diosohio.org if you plan to attend so we have a rough count of participants (or just show up). Robert D. Bullard, Ph.D., is the founding director of the Bullard Center for Environmental and Climate Justice and distinguished professor of urban planning and environmental policy at Texas Southern University. He received his Ph.D. degree in sociology from Iowa State University. In 2021, President Joe Biden named him to the White House Environmental Justice Advisory Council (WHEJAC). In 2022, the University of California, Berkeley Ecology Law Quarterly gave him its Environmental Leadership Award; the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) honored him with its Lifetime Achievement Award; Georgetown University and the University of Johannesburg awarded him honorary doctorates; and he was elected to join the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Friendship Dinner Volunteers Needed! – It’s that time again to sign-up to volunteer for the Friendship Dinner on Thursday, March 14. The sign-up sheet is in the Atrium. Bob Hays will be cooking his famous Texas Chili with cornbread. Any questions, you can text me (John Ross) at 847-254-1821 or email me at jbross53@gmail.com.

Religious Life Sunday on March 17 – Did you know that the Episcopal Church has monasteries of monks and convents of nuns? Or that a layperson can take vows as part of a religious community while living in their own home, working a job, being married or partnered, and raising children? In observance of Religious Life Sunday, Sister Paulette Michael Strolia-Davis of the Anamchara Fellowship will offer a presentation on religious life in the Episcopal Church on Sunday, March 17, at 10:15 a.m. in Kilbourne Hall. All are invited to learn more about this way of Christian life, whether it speaks to your heart or you’re simply curious.

Lenten Day of Preparation – All are invited to gather on Saturday morning, March 23, to prepare our hearts and minds for Holy Week, led by the Rev. Dn. Catherine Duffy. We will engage with scripture, pray, and reflect on the meaning of Holy Week in our journey as Christians and how we can make the most out of the week. We will begin at 9:30 am and conclude at 12:00 pm with noonday prayer. Coffee and light snacks will be available. Sign up in the atrium or email the office at bellao@stjohnsworthington.org by March 17.

Singles Dining Out – will gather at Molly Woo’s Asian Bistro on Tuesday, March 26, at 6:00 pm. Molly Woo’s is located in Polaris Fashion Place at 1500 Polaris Parkway, Columbus, Ohio 43240. Molly Woo’s varied dinner menu can be found at https://mollywoos.com/menus/dinner-menu/. They also have a gluten-free menu. Please RSVP to Anne Davidson at annedavidson@msn.com or 614-595-4844 so she can let Molly Woo’s know the size of our group. Singles Dining Out is an informal group of St. John’s parishioners and friends, always happy to welcome new participants. Singles and married individuals who will be attending without their spouse are welcome to participate, and feel free to invite a friend who is not a member of St. John’s. We hope you can join us for Chinese fare at Molly Woo’s on March 26!

St. John’s supports Ronald McDonald House Charities!  Join fellow parishioners on Wednesday, March 27, from 3:30 pm until approximately 7:00 pm in the kitchen at the Ronald McDonald House located at 711 E. Livingston Avenue in Columbus to prepare a home cooked meal for families staying at the House. We will work in a commercial kitchen under the guidance of a professional chef.  Volunteers, aged 14 and older, can take part in this community outreach program called Team Cuisine. Contact Jean Duncan or Lily Balukjian (Thompson) for more information.  Look for the sign-up sheet on the Atrium information table and at the RMHC display on March 10.

Suggested Grocery Items for Food Pantry Donations – for next week: canned fruit; toothpaste. You can place your food, toiletry, and baby donations in the food baskets in the atrium. You can also give online at www.worthingtonresourcepantry.org/donate/ or www.gladdenhouse.org/food-pantry.

In the Garden Feeding Ministry at Trinity Church – Thanks to all those who contributed food for In the Garden and went to Trinity in February to serve about 45 downtown residents.  We will be serving again in just two weeks on Palm Sunday, March 24.  Our menu will be meat loaf and mashed potatoes, rolls, salad, and fruit.  Please sign up in the atrium on the 10th or 17th to bring food to church and/or to serve downtown on the 24th.  There will be pans on the table with the recipe for those willing to make meat loaf.  As always, the generosity of St. John’s parishioners can be counted on!

Easter Flower Donations – St. John’s Flower Guild is asking the congregation for donations for Easter Flowers.  There will be donation envelopes in the pews marked “Easter Flowers”. You can also request the donation be in Honor of, in Thanksgiving for, or in Memory of a specific person by filling out form found on table in Atrium. Please put forms or envelopes in offertory plate or church office. We are asking for donations to be given by March 24. If you have any questions, please contact Donna Somerville (614)208-8573.

Notes:

St. John’s has two separate prayer lists.

To add names to the “public” prayer list as seen above, please call the church office at 614-846-5180, or send an email to Bellao@stjohnsworthington.org. Names added to that sheet will remain on the prayer list for three weeks, or shorter if requested. Last names are not used. If you wish prayers to be continued, simply list the name on the prayer list again. Of course, you may always add names aloud during the prayers of the people.

There is also a “private” intercessory prayer group staffed by several volunteers from within the parish. To have your prayer request included on the prayer chain, please contact Jo Pascoe at 614-306-7983 or send email to twopas@aol.com
