Nehemiah Action May 21st
This May 21st, St. Johns is going to stand up for social justice issues at the 2024 Nehemiah Action!
The Nehemiah Action will see 44 congregations from different denominations around Columbus, standing up for social justice on a local level. Some of the issues include affordable housing, environmental justice, restorative practices in schools, building trust with police, and reducing gang violence. Our Network Members at St. Johns would love to DOUBLE our parish participation from last year. We need help from YOU and yours to help us reach our goal!
On April 29th, we will kick off our sign-ups for the Nehemiah Action. You will see us in the Atrium providing snacks of different types of bread for coffee hour. We will have a table and a sign up sheet, with paper tickets and instructions for e-tickets. Simply approach the table, meet some of our friendliest Network Members there, and sign up.
Here are some FAQ’s:
If the tickets are free then why do we need to mess with tickets?
Yes, the tickets are free! They simply help BREAD to get a head count on who is coming and from which congregations. St. John’s gets street cred for your tickets. Okay, not street cred exactly, more like BREAD cred.
Is there dinner and carpooling like last year? I like my traditions.
Yes! We will meet at church at 5:30 for a simple dinner before we carpool to the event at the Celeste Center. Check the dinner box on the sign up sheet and we will have you covered!
What if I can’t meet you for dinner, 5:30 is too darn early for me?
If you are unable to meet us for dinner, that is fine. You can meet us at the fairgrounds. I will tell you where to find us, and we will have a sign. The event is scheduled kind of like a doctor’s appointment. The speakers start at 7:00 but with a 6:40 “arrival time”. (Just try to be there at 6:40, maybe I wasn’t supposed to tell you the part about 7 p.m.)
What if I get hungry while I’m there? Social justice always gives me the munchies.
Last year, there were some snacks available from concessions at the event. Or, you can sneak the snacks in just like you do at the movies.
Is it easy to park there? I have this recurring nightmare about trying to do something good in this world and not being able to find a parking spot to carry it out.
Parking is free, plenteous, and EASY, so don’t let that stress you out. Or, jump in a carpool car in the parking lot after dinner.
Will we all sit together? I don’t want to be lonely.
Yes! We will all sit together as we listen to the speakers and chant the responses. We will have a sign and I will send you an email about where to look for us when you arrive. But, if you prefer to sit on your own or with your family, that’s fine too!
Who should I invite?
Invite everyone you want to! Adult children, neighbors, friends, in or out of our congregation, literally anyone. I brought all of my young adult children last year and they loved it!
