This Week at St. John’s

Sunday School and Youth Roundtable Children ages 3-11 who attend the 9:00 service are invited to Children’s Church. Please meet at the front step after the welcome to follow the crucifer to the upstairs room. We’ll return to “big church” at the Peace. Children ages 3 through 5th grade, meet us in the Atrium at 10:00 for Sunday School! We use the interactive Godly Play program to teach stories from our tradition in a hands-on manner. We’ll be in Classroom 2, on the 3rd floor by the unfinished room. Middle and high schoolers, meet in the Atrium at 10:00 for Youth Roundtable. We’ll walk to a bakery in Old Worthington for fellowship, discussion of the Bible readings for the day, and a sweet treat.
Youth Group meets Sundays at 2 p.m. – We meet weekly, along with youth from St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. This week we’ll gather in the Carriage House from 2:00 – 3:30 p.m. 6th -12th graders welcome, and there will be snacks!
Annual Parish Meeting – Sunday, February 19, at 10:15 a.m., in the nave, and livestreamed on YouTube.
The Church Office will be closed – Monday, February 20, in observance of Presidents’ Day.

Facing Loss – By popular demand, Larae Schraeder, Elder law Attorney, will return to St. John’s on February 20 at 1:00 p.m. in the Atrium. All are welcome. A repeat will take place in the Conference Room at 7:00 p.m. that day for any ‘worker bees’ who cannot come during daytime. Her subject is Life and Estate Planning tips. Bring all your questions. Please register for the evening session (only) so we can plan for seating. Call Cynthia Woodbeck, 614-847-9529. We also will reconvene for 4th Monday Loss Lunch at Worthington La Chatelaine on February 27. No reservation is necessary, just come to the back room for good food and fellowship. Our Episcopalian and Presbyterian churches sponsor this group to welcome all those with loss or caregiving responsibilities and those who wish to support them. Newcomers Gathering – Sunday, February 26, our Newcomers Committee invites all “newish” attendees, and those wishing to greet our new attendees to an event in Kilbourne Hall in between the 9 am and 11:15 am services. Please join us for the fellowship, to learn about each other, and to hear about the programs at St. Johns. Who’s “new”? You are “new enough” if you consider yourself newish in any way. The Committee also invites all “not-so-new” members to attend so that they can meet others and share their experiences at St. Johns.
In the Garden – St. John’s monthly opportunity to feed the hungry at Trinity Church downtown (Broad and Third, SE corner) is on Sunday, February 26. We are serving chicken and noodles and there are pans with the recipe inside on the atrium table. We also need bags of salad, dinner rolls, and fruit (cuties or bananas). If you can help by preparing the main dish or bringing a side item, please sign up this Sunday using the sheet on the atrium table. Any one interested in coming to Trinity to serve from noon until 2:00pm can sign-up as well. All food needs to be brought to church on Sunday, February 26 by 11:15 and deposited in the bins under the table. Diocesan Civil Rights Pilgrimage Information – Information about the intergenerational Diocesan Civil Rights Pilgrimage from May 31 to June 7, 2023 is on the table in the atrium along with registration forms. 40 lives saved! – Yes, thanks to the 21 folks who signed in at the Versiti Blood Drive at St. John’s on February 11, Versiti successfully collected 12 whole blood units, 2 double red blood cell units, and 1 plasma unit. These blood products have the potential to save up to 40 lives! Thanks to all who signed up to donate and to the parishioners who served as friendly greeters during the blood drive. Versiti sent us a ‘great big heartfelt thank you’ for a successful blood drive.
Coffee Hour – A paper copy of the Coffee Hour Host sign-up sheet is in the Atrium. This replaces the on-line Sign-up Genius. Please check your calendar and consider signing up to host a Sunday Coffee Hour. It is fun and a great way to share fellowship! St. John’s Book Club – We’re reading The Best Christian Short Stories, edited by Bret Lott. Each story confronts us with who we are in God’s world and forces us to look deeply at the human condition. We will meet each Wednesday at 7 pm on Zoom, click HERE. The book is available from Amazon as used copies ranging in price from $1.09 to $9.99, plus shipping. If interested order your copy ASAP as shipping times can be long. There are 11 short stories and we will read this book as long as interest continues. Urgent – Help Victims of Earthquake in Southern Turkey – Worthington Interfaith Neighbors is sharing information from our friends at Turkish American Society of Ohio (TASO) about how your community can provide aid to victims of the earthquake in Turkey. The death toll has surpassed 40,000 and the destruction is catastrophic. Members of our Worthington community have lost family members in this tragedy, so the impact is local as well. Episcopal Relief & Development – St. John’s Outreach and Social Justice Committee has made a monetary donation to the Episcopal Relief & Development (ER&D) Turkey-Syria Earthquake Response Fund. ER&D with Action by Churches Together (ACT Alliance) is providing emergency relief to people affected by the 7.8- and 7.5-magnitude earthquakes in Turkey and Syria. Working through the Middle East Council of Churches and other local organizations, the ACT Alliance is providing shelter, supplies and support to families and local hospitals. ER&D has been partnering with the ACT Alliance for over 20 years and continue to talk with partners working in Turkey and Syria to assess the medium- and long-term needs. Sharing Our Stories – February 28, 7:00 p.m. – Sara Abou Rashed – Nationally known poet and public speaker Sara Abou Rashed is the storyteller behind ”A Map of Myself,” a one-woman show on immigration, finding home, language, identity, DNA and everything in between, which she has created with director Larry Smith and performed over 15 times across the United States. In this talk, she’ll pick up where she left off, introducing new audience members to her journey but also following up on where else her map has taken her since launching the show in 2018. A Palestinian in origin, Sara was born and raised in Syria but calls Ohio home since 2013. Her works appear in the anthology A Land With A People, Poetry Magazine, Poetry Wales, Arab Literature Quarterly, as well as the latest High School English curriculum from McGraw Hill. Sara has delivered a TEDx Talk and keynoted many national conferences such as Senator Sherrod Brown’s Women’s Leadership Conference. With a BA from Denison University, Sara is currently pursuing her MFA in Creative Writing at the University of Michigan. In-person at Old Worthington Library 820 High Street And Via Zoom. Ronald McDonald House Wish List Drive – Coming in March, The Outreach and Social Justice Committee will be holding a Travel Size Toiletry Kit Wish List donation drive for the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Columbus. The Wish List includes TRAVEL SIZE items used in each guest room of the House. As you do your regular shopping please pick up some Wish List items: travel size shampoo, travel size conditioner, travel size soap, travel size body wash, and travel size body lotion. St. John’s and Ronald McDonald House (RMH) Team Cuisine – You are invited to join fellow parishioners on Wednesday, March 22nd for a hands-on event at the RMH in Columbus. St. John’s will be taking part in the RMH Team Cuisine program to prepare dinner for families staying at the RMH. Consider joining in this community outreach. We are in need of 6 – 12 volunteers, aged 15 years and older. All volunteers must be Covid vaccinated. We will be preparing and serving dinner with a professional chef from 3:30 until 7:00 p.m.
