This Week at St. John’s – April 2, 2023

This Week at St. John’s
April 2, 2023

Palm Sunday — We observe the beginning of Holy Week with Palm Sunday on April 2. As this is the first Sunday of the month, the 9:00 a.m. service will be all-ages worship. Both 9:00 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. services will begin with the Liturgy of the Palms on the south lawn—the patch of grass between the parking lot and the stairs to the church office—if the weather cooperates, and in the Atrium if it rains. We’ll process into the nave carrying our palms.

Intergenerational Palm Sunday Workshop – April 2, 10:15 a.m., Kilbourne Hall – In observance of Palm Sunday, we will learn how to make crosses from palm leaves, and we’ll also make stations of the cross that will be incorporated into our 5:45 Good Friday service. All ages, from 1 to 151, are welcome!

Youth Group meets Sundays at 2 p.m. – We meet weekly, along with youth from St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church.  This week we’ll gather in the Carriage House from 2:00 – 3:30 p.m. 6th -12th graders welcome, and there will be snacks!

Celtic Holy Week Worship – Please join us in the atrium at 5 pm on Sunday, April 2, for a Celtic Service observing the events of The Last Week.  This is a quiet, meditative, and intimate service with music and liturgy based on the Iona Abbey Worship Book, followed by a time of fellowship and hospitality.  We welcome all St. John’s parishioners and friends from outside our church family to join our Celtic circle to mark the conclusion of our Lenten journey toward Easter.

Sign Up for Maundy Thursday Agape Meal — Our worship on Maundy Thursday, April 6, will begin at 7:00pm in Kilbourne Hall with a simple vegetarian supper called an agape meal. So that we can clean up quickly and move into the nave for footwashing, Eucharist, and the stripping of the altar, this meal will be light—it will not be your main source of calories for the day. You may wish to eat something more substantial before the service. RSVP on the signup sheets at the Atrium table, or by contacting the parish office at VirginiaN@StJohnsWorthington.org or 614-846-5180 by Monday, April 3.

Easter Flowers – The Flower Guild is asking the congregation for donations for Easter Flowers. You can place your donations in the envelopes in the pews marked “Easter Flowers”. You may also fill out a form found in the Atrium where you give the flowers in Memory of, in Honor of, or in Thanksgiving for a special person. Place this form in offertory plate along with your donation. We would like all donations by Sunday, April 2. If you have any questions, please contact Donna Somerville at (614)208-8573.

Altar Rail Gate Changes – The Altar rail gate has developed both a gap between the two parts of the gate and a dip in the gate. The weaker the rail gate gets, the more likely it is that the gate may fail when someone leans on it, and someone will fall through and be hurt. We want to keep everyone safe, so we will no longer be closing the rail gate. We encourage those who wish to kneel at the Altar rail while receiving Communion, to step to either side of the rail opening to kneel. Those who prefer to stand while receiving Communion may stand in front of the rail opening or on either side. If you have any questions about the rail gate, please speak to Lisa Graupmann.

Update or add your photo to the church directory TODAY!  A member of the Newcomers Committee will be taking directory photos in the Atrium on Palm Sunday between services.  You may have your photo taken or we can show you how to add your own photo through the Ministry One app.  Look for the sign in the Atrium to find out where and say cheese!

St. John’s Supports Ronald McDonald House!  St. John’s Outreach and Social Justice Committee is sponsoring a “Travel Size Toiletry Kit Donation Drive” from March 19 until April 9. Families staying at the RMH are provided with hotel style toiletry kits to make their stay more comfortable.  OSJ will be collecting donations of travel size shampoo, body wash, hand soap, and body lotion to build the kits.  To be sure that we are able to make complete kits, please take a card(s) from the display in the Atrium and bring your donation back any time during the “Travel Size Toiletry Kit Donation Drive”.  The cards list the item and quantity needed for each donation.  Thank you for your support!  Please see Lily Balukjian (Thompson) or Jean Duncan if you have any questions.

Facing Loss – Our 3rd Monday program for Monday, April 17 at 1:00 p.m. in the St. John’s Atrium will feature Rose Beeson, Nurse Geriatric Specialist and Alzheimer’s professional. This meeting will be a CAREGIVER’S FORUM for those actively caregiving, others with helpful knowledge and those who support them. Those afflicted should not attend. Those with partners in memory care are also encouraged to come. Questions? Contact Co-chairs Cynthia Woodbeck (SJE) 847-9529, cwoodbeck235@gmail.com or Louann Shearer (WPC) 567-377-3194.

Singles Dining Out – will gather at Marcella’s on Wednesday, April 19, at 6:00 pm.  Marcella’s is located at 1319 Polaris Parkway, Columbus, Ohio 43240. Marcella’s let Donna know that seating will be limited to 19 that night, so be prompt with your RSVP.  Singles Dining Out is an informal group of St. John’s parishioners and friends, always happy to welcome new participants. Singles and married individuals who will be attending without their spouse are welcome to participate, and feel free to invite a friend who is not a member of St. John’s. We hope you can join us for Italian fare at Marcella’s on April 19!

Notes:

St. John’s has two separate prayer lists.

To add names to the “public” prayer list as seen above, please call the church office at 614-846-5180, or send an email to VirginiaN@stjohnsworthington.org. Names added to that sheet will remain on the prayer list for three weeks, or shorter if requested. Last names are not used. If you wish prayers to be continued, simply list the name on the prayer list again. Of course, you may always add names aloud during the prayers of the people.

There is also a “private” intercessory prayer group staffed by several volunteers from within the parish. To have your prayer request included on the prayer chain, please contact Jo Pascoe at 614-885-1773 and leave a message or twopas@aol.com
