This Week at St. John’s
January 7, 2024
A Special Visitor This Sunday – Bishop-elect Kristin White will be with us on January 7! Although she won’t officially become our bishop until her consecration on February 17, she doesn’t want to wait to meet people, so she’s visiting congregations around the diocese in this in-between time. She’ll sit in the pews at both services and hang out with the youth group in the afternoon. Please introduce yourself to our next bishop before or after church!
Sunday School for Kids & Youth – All offerings are led by two Safe Church trained adults.
For the first half of the 9 am service, kids are invited to join us for children’s church upstairs, with a children’s sermon and time for prayer. Kids return to Kilbourne Hall in time for communion.
At 10:15 am between the services, 6th -12th graders are invited to join us for Youth Roundtable, where we grab a snack and talk about the readings scheduled for that particular Sunday. Meet in the atrium.
Also at 10:15, kids aged 3-11 are invited to join us for Godly Play, a Montessori-style Sunday school program. Meet in the atrium.
Acolyte Training Session – Have you ever wondered what an acolyte is? Or what does an acolyte do? Are you or your child interested in becoming an acolyte? If so, please come to the acolyte training session, which is scheduled for Sunday, January 7. It will be held in the church between the services. The training session is for new acolytes and anyone who is interested in learning more about this rewarding ministry. At St. John’s, both children and adults participate equally in this ministry. Children in fourth grade and above are eligible to serve as an acolyte. If you have any questions, please contact Lisa Graupmann at 614-653-1917 or lisa.graupmann@gmail.com.
Volunteers needed for the January 11th Friendship Dinner – The January 11th dinner is coming upon us. We need 1 food prep volunteer, minimum of 3 volunteers for set-up and 3 volunteers for cleanup. Come and help celebrate the New Year with our Worthington neighbors! Please sign up on the sheet in the Atrium or contact John Ross by text 847-254-1821 or email jbross53@gmail.com. I do not answer calls for numbers I am not familiar with, so texting or email is the best way to contact me. Thank you for all your support of the Friendship Dinner.
Adult Formation – Salem Witch Trials – Sarah Iles Johnston will follow up her lectures earlier this year on the anthropological approach to understanding evil with two historically-focused lectures on the Salem witchcraft trials. The first will be on January 14 and the second on January 21. Both Adult Formation meetings will be held in Kilbourne Hall at 10:15 am. She’ll begin by looking at Protestant attitudes towards witchcraft in the decades preceding the trials (spoiler alert: they definitely believed that witches existed), then go through what happened in Salem itself and how ministers were involved. She’ll finish with a quick look at the aftermath.
Facing Loss with SJE/WPC – Monday, January 15, at 1:00 pm will find us in St. John’s Atrium for our third Monday meeting. Bring something or a concept that has brought you solace in your journey with grief. Comforting conversations always ensue with a thought to carry you through. Are you new to loss? You will find our compassionate nucleus surrounding you with love and support. Renewed Faith for the new year will entice you to our fourth Monday casual Lunch at the Worthington La Chatelaine at 12:00 noon on January 22 for a robust meal and good company guaranteed!
