Children’s Church, Sunday School and Youth Roundtable — Children ages 3-11 who attend the 9:00 service are invited to Children’s Church. Please meet at the front step after the welcome to follow the crucifer to the upstairs room. We’ll return to “big church” at the Peace. Children ages 3 through 5th grade, meet us in the Atrium at 10:00 for Sunday School! We use the interactive Godly Play program to teach stories from our tradition in a hands-on manner. We’ll be in Classroom 2, on the 3rd floor by the unfinished room. Middle and high schoolers, meet in the Atrium at 10:00 for Youth Roundtable. We’ll walk to a bakery in Old Worthington for fellowship, discussion of the Bible readings for the day, and a sweet treat.
Newcomers Committee Meeting – The Newcomers Committee will be holding their first committee meeting of 2023 on Sunday, January 15, at 10:00 in the Conference Room. Please join us if you would like to hear more about what the committee is working on or if you are looking to get involved in our ministry. We always welcome new members and would love to have you on our team!
Schantz Organ Demonstration on January 15 — Organist Stephen Sollars will offer a demonstration of our main Schantz pipe organ at about 10:15 a.m. on Sunday, January 15. He’ll show us how pipe organs make different kinds of sound, explain the parts of the instrument, and give us an idea of the problems we face as the Schantz is aging. As our parish begins to discuss addressing the challenges of the Schantz, this demonstration will provide valuable background to the conversations we’ll have this year. All are welcome.
Youth Group meets Sundays at 2 p.m. – We meet weekly, along with youth from St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. This week we’ll gather at St. Stephen’s at 30 W. Woodruff Ave. on the Ohio State campus from 2:00 – 3:30 p.m. 6th-12th graders welcome, and there will be snacks!
Music Series Concert, Sunday, January 15 – Join us for this free concert, beginning at 3:00 p.m. in the nave. Brent Kimball is a tenor who is no stranger to music. He is well known for his Gospel music, but he has sung in many musicals and operas. His gospel music has taken him across the country, filling in for the Chuck Wagon Gang. He has also sung internationally, singing with choirs in Italy, Ireland, and Canada. He has performed with several community theater productions, such as The Drowsy Chaperone, Chicago, and Into the Woods. Along with his Gospel music, Brent has also preached around the Ohio Valley, and is in charge of the Praise and Worship services at St. John Central Academy, where he teaches full-time. He has two Bachelor’s degrees from West Liberty University in Vocal Performance and Music Education. He also has a Masters of Music in Vocal Performance from Duquesne University. ~ Nick Taylor

New Book Club for the New Year – We will be reading The Wonder Worker: A Novel (St. Benet’s Trilogy Book 1), by Susan Howatch. The book deals with many spiritual issues and guides the reader to examine their own ideas about God and humanity. We meet on Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m. on Zoom, click HERE. Coffee Hour – A paper copy of the Coffee Hour Host sign-up sheet has been placed on the Information Table in the Atrium. This replaces the on-line Sign-up Genius. Please check your calendar and consider signing up to host a Sunday Coffee Hour. It is fun and a great way to share fellowship! Time to Cook – St John’s Chili Cook-off is January 21 at 6 PM in Kilbourne Hall. All are welcome (kids included). We are looking forward to an evening of fun and fellowship with our chili cook-off and tasting. Perhaps you will win the prize! We welcome chilis of all varieties to test the palates of the group. Chili not your choice? Side dishes, desserts and garnishes are also welcome. Stories from Afghanistan Speaker – Ali Akhundzada – Please join us Sunday, January 22, at 10:15 a.m. in Kilbourne Hall to hear Irfan Ali Shah Akundzada share his story with us about fleeing Afghanistan, with his wife and five of his seven children, during the U.S. military withdrawal from that country to start a new life in Columbus. This is the family we have been supporting along with Worthington UMC since early 2022, and we are excited that he is joining us to talk about his experiences. In the Garden Ministry – Thanks to all those who contributed food for Christmas Day, In the Garden, and to those who went downtown on a frigid and snowy Christmas morning to serve food and distribute gifts to downtown residents! We will be serving again on Sunday, January 22, just two weeks away. Please sign up in the atrium to bring food to church or to serve downtown on January 22. WIN (Worthington Interfaith Neighbors) is excited to announce that we are returning to in-person programs! January 24 – Sharing Our Stories – Frank Han will share his “Immigration Road Trip: From China to U.S.” (Previously cancelled in October 2022 due to illness.) This program will be in-person at the Old Worthington Library as well as via Zoom. January 29 – WIN 2023 Film Festival – Belfast will be the featured film of our first evening. Belfast is a 2021 award-winning drama/comedy about the life of a young boy and his family during “The Troubles” between Catholic and Protestant residents of Northern Ireland, a violent era which began in the late 1960’s and lasted about 30 years. The WIN Film Festival will be held at the Worthington United Methodist Church. Each evening’s event will begin with a meal at 5:30 pm (optional), film showing at 6:30 pm and panel discussion at 8 pm. Dinner reservations are $20 in advance. The dinner for the movie Belfast will be catered by Fado’ Pub and Kitchen. Please choose Shepherd’s Pie or Corned Beef and Cabbage for your entree’. St. John’s Arts and Crafts Ministry – February 5, there will be a Show and Tell Exhibit in Kilbourne Hall during the Adult Formation hour between the 9:00 and 11:15 services. We have many gifted parishioners who will display their creations. We have painters (acrylic, oil and watercolor), a photographer, quilters, a rug hooker, book maker, weaver and lace maker, a knitter, cross stitcher and wood worker. This is an opportunity to see what we are doing and provide you with an opportunity to explore your own creative juices. Be a Life Saver! – St. John’s will host a blood drive on February 8, 2:00-7:00 pm, in Kilbourne Hall, with Versiti Blood Center, the main supplier of blood to the Ohio State University Wexner Center. Someone needs blood every 2 seconds, and your donation may help a NICU baby, cancer fighter, sickle cell warrior, transplant patient, trauma survivor, or someone else. Fundraising Campaign – Trinity Episcopal Church on Capitol Square has launched a fundraising campaign to support more than a hundred families, former residents of the Latitude Five25 apartments in East Columbus, who were forced to evacuate their homes on Christmas Day without their belongings when pipes throughout the building burst. Bishop Wayne Smith has pledged $5,000 in matching funds from the diocese to kickstart the campaign, and Trinity has pledged $2,500 from a designated outreach fund. Donate now to support Trinity’s ministry with Latitude Five25 families and your gift will be matched. “I’ve had the privilege of serving as a chaplain at the American Red Cross emergency relief shelter, sitting with these folks and hearing their stories,” the Rev. Jed Dearing, associate rector at Trinity, Capitol Square, said. “The city has begun moving people into motels, but the search for long-term housing is just beginning. This is a moment for the community to come together to support our neighbors.” While the City of Columbus arranges for short-term motel housing, Latitude Five25’s property management company is refusing to refund security deposits or rent checks, and residents of the building’s 152 occupied apartments are unable to return to their homes to collect their belongings. Read more in The Columbus Dispatch. “All gifts will go toward food or direct financial support to former residents of Latitude Five25 through the Community Shelter Board and other partners working to rehouse our neighbors,” Dearing said. “If Ohioans are able, we ask that they make a contribution, then share the fundraising link on social media to help spread the word.”
Used Eyeglasses – Worthington Lions has a box on the Atrium table for any eyeglasses you may not need any longer. The glasses will be given to the Student Optometric Services at OSU, to be refurbished for mission trips to third world countries.
